Hong Kong Stocks Open Lower as Hang Seng Index Falls 2.09%; Insurance and Biotech Shares Decline

On October 2, the Hang Seng Index opened down 2.09% at 24,099.73 points; the Hang Seng Tech Index dropped 1.81% to 4,176.92 points; and the China Enterprises Index fell 1.72% to 8,078.49 points. Pre-market turnover data for the broader market was not yet available at the time of reporting.

Among sectors, hardware equipment and papermaking sectors showed strength, with other support services rising 3.17%; the dairy products sector declined (down 3.19%), energy storage devices fell 2.94%, the biotechnology sector dropped 2.37%, the coal sector declined 2.29%, the insurance sector fell 1.72%, and the real estate investment sector dropped 2.03%.

Among Hang Seng Index constituent stocks, Orient Overseas (International) Ltd (00316) rose 0.63%, New Oriental Education & Technology Group Inc-S (09901) gained 0.23%, and China Unicom (Hong Kong) Ltd (00762) edged up 0.09%, leading the gainers; BeiGene Ltd (06160) dropped 5.68% and HSBC Holdings plc (00005) fell 5.51%, leading the decliners.

Among Hang Seng Tech Index constituent stocks, NIO Inc-SW (09866) rose 1.96% and Tianshu Zhixin (09903) gained 0.47%, leading the gainers; XPeng Inc-W (09868) fell 2.96%, leading the decliners.

Of the 95 constituent stocks in the Hang Seng Index, 4 advanced and 91 declined; of the 30 constituent stocks in the Hang Seng Tech Index, 2 advanced and 28 declined.

Influenced by an overnight across-the-board decline in U.S. financial stocks and the 30-year U.S. Treasury yield hitting 5.65%, a high not seen since 2002, Hong Kong financial, real estate, and high-valuation sectors opened lower today. Southbound Hong Kong Stock Connect trading will be suspended from October 1 to October 7 and will resume on October 8.
