US President Donald Trump has rejected calls for an international agreement to establish safety guardrails for AI development, downplaying the potential dangers posed by the loss of control over frontier models. Despite warnings from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, leaders of the UK, France, and Canada, as well as several leading AI laboratories, Trump stated that existing US mechanisms are sufficient to mitigate these risks.
Speaking at the UN General Assembly in New York, Trump declared, "The United States firmly rejects any attempt to build a globalist scheme to control artificial intelligence. I will not stifle the development of something that could have a greater impact than the Industrial Revolution."
Guterres, aged 77, responded by stating that "governments with the strongest AI capabilities also bear the greatest responsibility to humanity, and should establish channels for dialogue, transparency, trust, and cooperation."
OpenAI also called on Monday for internationally agreed standards to ensure the safe development of AI.
