The rapid expansion of global data center infrastructure and surging power demand driven by artificial intelligence are fueling a new upcycle for power equipment suppliers. The energy giant spun off from General Electric, GE Vernova, delivered second-quarter results that significantly exceeded expectations and raised its full-year revenue and cash flow guidance, indicating accelerating demand for grid, electrification, and gas power equipment.
The company's second-quarter revenue grew 22% year-over-year to $11.1 billion, while order intake reached a record $24.2 billion, an 88% increase. The Power segment benefited from surging gas turbine demand, while the Electrification business directly capitalized on AI data center expansion, with orders from data center clients surpassing $5 billion year-to-date.
Bolstered by robust orders and improving profitability, GE Vernova raised its 2026 revenue outlook to a range of $45.5 billion to $46.5 billion. Simultaneously, it substantially increased its free cash flow target from $6.5-$7.5 billion to $11.5-$12.5 billion. A $176 billion order backlog provides substantial visibility for future growth.
Profitability Shows Divergence
However, profit performance presented a mixed picture. The company's adjusted earnings per share (EPS) for the quarter was $2.47, a 33% increase, but fell short of the market consensus of $3.01, suggesting a lag between order growth and profit realization. Furthermore, the Wind segment remains a weak spot, with an expected full-year EBITDA loss of approximately $400 million, continuing to weigh on overall profitability.
AI Data Centers Fuel Power Demand, Gas Turbine Orders Soar
The core driver of GE Vernova's improved performance stems from structural shifts in global power demand. As AI model training and inference needs grow rapidly, data center power consumption continues to climb, making power supply capacity a critical constraint on computing expansion. Compared to new energy projects, gas-fired power generation, with its advantages of shorter construction cycles and higher stability, has become a key solution for meeting the new electricity demands of large data centers.
This trend is directly reflected in the performance of GE Vernova's Power segment. Second-quarter orders for the segment reached $16.7 billion, up 134% year-over-year, primarily from gas power equipment demand. This included orders for 52 heavy-duty gas turbines—15 of which were HA-class turbines—and 61 aeroderivative gas turbines. Segment revenue for the quarter was $5.477 billion, a 14% increase, with the EBITDA margin improving by 240 basis points to 18.8%.
Electrification Business Captures AI Dividend, Data Center Orders Emerge as New Growth Engine
Beyond power generation equipment, the grid and power transmission sectors are also benefiting from the expansion of AI infrastructure. GE Vernova's Electrification business posted second-quarter revenue of $3.637 billion, a 68% increase (29% organic growth). The segment's book-to-bill ratio was approximately 1.7, indicating sustained strong future demand. Its EBITDA margin reached 18.4%, a 700-basis-point improvement, driven by growth in power transmission equipment and grid systems integration.
Notably, data centers are becoming a significant growth source for this business. The company stated that year-to-date orders from data center customers have exceeded $5 billion, more than double the full-year 2025 target. The Electrification business backlog now stands at $40.6 billion, a 69% increase year-over-year.
Wind Business Remains a Drag, Profit Recovery Requires Time
Despite rapid growth across other segments, Wind remains a clear weakness in GE Vernova's financials. Second-quarter Wind revenue was $2.026 billion, down 10% year-over-year, impacted by lower delivery volumes due to weak 2025 onshore wind orders. The segment's EBITDA loss widened to $275 million, a deterioration of 630 basis points, primarily due to offshore wind deliveries and cost pressures in onshore projects.
Wind orders for the quarter were only $1.249 billion, a 40% decline. The company expects the Wind business to continue declining at a low double-digit rate in 2026, with a full-year EBITDA loss of approximately $400 million. However, the importance of the Wind segment is diminishing as the market increasingly focuses on the growth opportunities from gas power, grid equipment, and AI infrastructure.
Cash Flow Improves Significantly, Company Boosts Capital Returns
As profitability improves, GE Vernova's cash flow position continues to strengthen. The company ended the second quarter with a cash balance of $13.1 billion, an increase of $4.3 billion since the start of the year. Strong cash flow has enabled increased shareholder returns. Year-to-date, the company has repurchased approximately 4.3 million shares at an average price of $85.4 per share, deploying about $3.7 billion, while continuing to pay a quarterly dividend.
Full-Year Guidance Raised, Market Bets on Extended Power Investment Cycle
Based on a strong first half, GE Vernova raised its full-year 2026 targets. The company now expects full-year revenue of $45.5-$46.5 billion, free cash flow of $11.5-$12.5 billion, and an adjusted EBITDA margin of 12%-14%. Specifically, the organic growth outlook for the Power segment was raised from 16%-18% to 18%-20%, with an EBITDA margin target of 17%-19%. The revenue target for the Electrification business was increased to $14.5-$15.0 billion, with an EBITDA margin target of 18%-20%.
The $176 billion order backlog enhances growth certainty for GE Vernova in the coming years.
