Pre-market trading on Monday, August 17, shows the three major US stock index futures heading in different directions. Dow futures slipped 0.16%, while S&P 500 futures edged up 0.12% and Nasdaq futures climbed 0.52% at the time of writing.

Across the Atlantic, Germany's DAX rose 0.10%, the UK's FTSE 100 gained 0.21%, France's CAC 40 dipped 0.13%, and the Euro Stoxx 50 added 0.30%. In the commodities space, WTI crude advanced 0.59% to $81.95 per barrel, while Brent crude gained 0.80% to $89.23 per barrel.

Retail Earnings Week Takes Center Stage

Investors are entering a relatively quiet five-day stretch after last week's inflation worries and questions over the Federal Reserve's next move. Major retail earnings and a wave of manufacturing data will dominate the market narrative this week.

Thursday brings a heavy batch of big-box retailer results, with Walmart Inc (NYSE: WMT), Ross Stores Inc (NASDAQ: ROST), and Deere & Company (NYSE: DE) all reporting quarterly figures, followed by BJ's Wholesale Club Holdings Inc (NYSE: BJ) on Friday.

On the economic data front, manufacturing indicators take priority. Industrial production and manufacturing output figures are due Tuesday, with S&P Global's US Manufacturing PMI following on Friday. The calendar also includes Tuesday's housing starts report, which is expected to show a sharp decline, and Wednesday's release of minutes from the Fed's latest meeting.

Strait of Hormuz Shipping Nearly Halted

Shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has come to a near standstill over the weekend as the 60-day US-Iran ceasefire agreement expires Monday, with no formal negotiations underway and no visible path to a new deal. Kpler data shows only five vessels transited the critical energy chokepoint on Saturday, with zero registered crossings on Sunday, compared with 31 ships making the passage the previous weekend.

Iran's foreign ministry spokesman, Baghaei, stated on August 17 that Tehran is seriously drafting a maritime route plan with Oman. He noted that the complex security situation caused by US and Israeli actions, along with interference from numerous parties and disruptive factors, has prolonged the drafting process. Despite continued consultations, Iran has repeatedly made clear that reopening this strategic waterway depends on Washington fulfilling its obligations under the memorandum.

Goldman Sachs: Market Fed Bets Still Too Hawkish

Goldman Sachs chief economist Jan Hatzius wrote in a client note that a September rate hike is "very unlikely" given weak retail sales, disappointing employment data, and cooling inflation figures. "Based on our baseline economic forecast, inflation news is more likely to improve further over time rather than deteriorate again. We continue to believe the market's pricing of the federal funds rate is too hawkish," Hatzius said.

Traders have now pushed back expectations for the next 25-basis-point hike to January, whereas a week ago they fully priced in a December move. Goldman sees room for further declines in rate expectations despite some easing in hawkish sentiment. The bank also notes that Treasury yield curves could steepen further on improved inflation, lower hike premiums, and negative fiscal budget news.

AI Bull Market Enters the Earnings Era

Following the sharp rebound in semiconductor stocks and broader AI infrastructure themes since August, market volatility is rapidly subsiding. Morgan Stanley and JPMorgan have both released research notes arguing that the primary driver pushing the S&P 500 higher is shifting from valuation expansion to earnings upgrades and AI commercialization.

JPMorgan recently raised its end-2026 target from 7,800 to 8,000 points and upgraded EPS trajectories for this year and next. Morgan Stanley similarly lifted its 2026 target to 8,000 points and its 12-month target to 8,300, explicitly attributing the increase to earnings rather than valuations. At least seven Wall Street institutions now project the S&P 500 reaching 8,000 by the end of 2026.

US Consumer Warning Signs

US consumers have long been the backbone of economic resilience, but several major CEOs are now flagging that this momentum may be hitting a breaking point. McDonald's CEO Chris Kempczinski has highlighted consumer pressure and "heightened anxiety," while Whirlpool CEO Marc Bitzer describes a sharp contraction in major appliance demand.

Macro data confirms the strain on household finances. As of Q1 2026, US credit card balances reached $1.25 trillion and auto loan balances climbed to $1.69 trillion. Meanwhile, the personal savings rate fell to just 2.7% in June.

Chip and Optical Communications Stocks Rally Pre-Market

In Monday's pre-market trading, semiconductor names are broadly higher. SanDisk Corp (NASDAQ: SNDK) gained nearly 5%, SK Hynix Inc (OTC: SKHY) rose about 4%, Micron Technology Inc (NASDAQ: MU) and Western Digital Corp (NASDAQ: WDC) climbed over 3%, Seagate Technology Holdings PLC (NASDAQ: STX) advanced more than 2%, while Intel Corp (NASDAQ: INTC) and Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NASDAQ: AMD) added over 1%.

In optical communications, Astera Labs Inc (NASDAQ: ALAB) surged more than 5%, while Coherent Corp (NYSE: COHR), Lumentum Holdings Inc (NASDAQ: LITE), Corning Inc (NYSE: GLW), Marvell Technology Inc (NASDAQ: MRVL), and Credo Technology Group Holding Ltd (NASDAQ: CRDO) all gained over 2%. Nokia Oyj (NYSE: NOK) rose more than 1%.

Google Diversifies Funding to Support AI Ambitions

As US tech companies flood the corporate credit market to finance expanding AI infrastructure investments, Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ: GOOGL) is broadening its international debt channels. The company has hired major banks to prepare for a potential debut Australian dollar-denominated corporate bond issuance, possibly spanning four maturities with the longest reaching 20 years.

This year alone, Google has built a truly global capital markets network: February saw £5.5 billion (approximately $7.53 billion) and CHF 3.055 billion (approximately $3.98 billion) in bond issuances, including a rare 100-year bond not seen in the tech sector since 1997. Shortly after came €9 billion (approximately $10.6 billion), C$8.5 billion (approximately $6.2 billion), and a record ¥576.5 billion (approximately $3.6 billion) for a foreign issuer. Combined at issuance exchange rates, non-USD debt financing outside the US this year totals at least $31.9 billion.

Intel Weighs Memory Market Return

On August 11, Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan revealed in a podcast that new memory architectures, once considered "commodity businesses," have become strategically significant and are a key focus for him. He noted the memory industry is at a critical innovation juncture and hinted at exploring stacking memory atop CPUs.

For investors, signals of a potential return to the memory market tie directly to Intel's core investment thesis of refocusing its portfolio and rebuilding trust in its AI infrastructure role. Reintegrating memory could help Intel deliver more complete platforms for emerging AI workloads rather than just CPUs and foundry capacity. However, this also amplifies existing risks—Intel's complex organizational structure and already-high operating and capital expenditures remain key concerns, and re-entering the capital-intensive memory chip business will test how far the company can achieve operational simplification.
