Sky Seeks Up to €1.9 Billion in Damages from TIM and DAZN Over Serie A Broadcasting Rights

According to informed sources, pay-TV operator Sky has filed a lawsuit with a Milan court, seeking compensation of up to €1.9 billion from Telecom Italia (TIM) and sports streaming platform DAZN. Sky alleges that it suffered significant financial losses due to anticompetitive practices by the two companies in their 2021 agreement for Serie A broadcasting rights.

In 2021, DAZN acquired exclusive broadcasting rights in Italy for three Serie A seasons (2021–2024) for €2.5 billion and entered into a distribution partnership with TIM, a move that severely impacted Sky Italia. In the lawsuit, Sky contends that the agreement was designed to exclude it from the market and is claiming approximately €1 billion in lost profits. When including interest and brand devaluation, the total damages sought amount to €1.9 billion.

Previously, Italy’s antitrust authority ruled in 2023 that the TIM-DAZN agreement restricted market competition. After a series of appeals, the ruling became final last year. In January of this year, the regulator recalculated fines, ultimately penalizing DAZN €3.6 million and TIM approximately €760,000. All parties involved have declined to comment on the compensation claim.
