The Real Market Driver Right Now Might Surprise You

Deep News
Aug 20

China's A-share market posted a modest overall gain today (August 20), yet a clear divergence is emerging beneath the surface. Stocks tied to innovative drugs are celebrating, while tech sectors are splitting sharply—semiconductor materials and silicon wafer indices fell against the trend, humanoid robotics weakened again with Unitree dropping over 18%, and CPO concepts continued their surge. These events might seem unrelated, but a single thread connects them all. So what exactly is that thread?

At the same time, these moves highlight a bigger shift: August's A-shares are transitioning from a broad rebound to structural differentiation. Where do the opportunities lie next? Let's break it down piece by piece.

Vaccine Breakthrough Ignites Innovative Drugs

First, the data: Major indices closed slightly higher today, with the Shanghai Composite up 0.24%, Shenzhen Component up 0.59%, ChiNext up 0.64%, STAR Composite up 0.20%, and Beijing Stock Exchange 50 down 0.06%. Turnover hit 2.09 trillion yuan, the lowest in nearly two weeks, while 4,091 stocks rose versus 1,342 fell—a roughly 4:1 ratio pointing to solid profit-taking opportunities.

The core theme remains innovative drugs, a sector I've repeatedly flagged. As the hot concept index rankings show, all top ten gainers are linked to innovative drugs. Names like Baike Biotechnology, Walvax Biotechnology, CanSino Biologics, Kanghua Bio, Chongqing Zhifei Biological, and others hit their 20% daily limit, with double-digit gains widespread.

What's driving this strength? The catalyst comes from overseas. Moderna and Merck announced their personalized mRNA cancer vaccine, Intismeran, met primary and key secondary endpoints in a large Phase 3 trial. Compared to Keytruda alone, Intismeran combined with Keytruda as adjuvant therapy for melanoma significantly cut recurrence risk and distant metastasis. This marks the first positive Phase 3 result for an mRNA tumor vaccine, sending Moderna shares surging 176.97% overnight.

Industry insiders note that Intismeran's Phase 3 success validates the drugability of personalized neoantigen mRNA vaccines, expanding mRNA applications from infectious disease shots to oncology. This breakthrough directly fuels BD collaboration expectations and pipeline acceleration for domestic mRNA platform companies. Of course, this rally also reflects a convergence of earnings certainty and high-low switching—the core logic behind my earlier bullish calls on innovative drugs, so I won't repeat it here.

CPO Keeps Climbing

While semiconductor-linked segments lagged, optical modules (CPO) and optical circuit switches (OCS) performed strongly, with some stocks rivaling innovative drugs' gains. T&S Communications jumped 18.38%, Linktel Technologies rose 13.45%, and a dozen others like Dkor, Raintree Scientific, Zhongji Innolight, and Fujian Kekai gained over 5%.

I've highlighted CPO opportunities earlier, driven by repeated industry tailwinds. This latest surge follows suit. For instance, Robotechnik, a CPO "pick-and-shovel" player, announced on August 19 a major order: a single contract worth approximately $16.21 million (excluding tax, about RMB 109 million) with a subsidiary of a Nasdaq-listed company, covering mass-production coupling equipment and services—roughly 11.50% of its audited 2025 revenue.

Notably, Robotechnik had already disclosed two similar orders in July, valued at about €16.74 million (excluding tax, RMB 129 million) and €15.88 million (including 19% VAT, RMB 123 million), representing 13.59% and 12.94% of audited 2025 revenue, respectively. After those contracts, its stock bottomed out in late July and has since climbed over 20%.

Additionally, Tianfu Communication told institutional investors that its CPO-related supporting products have entered mass production and delivery. Shijia Photons recently reported progress across multiple core product lines, including MPO and high-channel FAU, with several flagship products now shipping at scale.

CPO's rally also has earnings backing. My data shows 12 related stocks have released 2026 semi-annual reports so far; 11 posted profits, and all 12 saw year-over-year growth. Yibo Technology led with a 1,561.55% earnings surge, while Dkor and Fujian Kekai both doubled profits.

Other key updates: 1) The shipping sector rebounded, with Phoenix Shipping hitting the daily limit. Its August 20 announcement showed H1 2026 revenue of RMB 673 million, up 95.70% year-over-year, and net profit of RMB 30 million, up 2,329.69%. Rivals like Shenghang Shipping and Xingtong Shipping also posted strong profit growth earlier. This underscores that earnings are steering the current market. 2) Humanoid robotics weakened further: Unitree fell 18.70%, with Zhongda Leader, Zhengyu Industrial, and Jintuo hitting limit-down for two straight sessions. Wolong Electric, Estun Automation, and Xiangyang Bearing also neared limit-downs. Some argue August 19's drop stemmed from capital siphoned into Unitree, but August 20's broad decline across the sector raises questions. Earnings tell the story: humanoid robotics lag CPO and shipping, with 7 of 18 reported H1 2026 companies seeing profit declines, the steepest falling over 100%.
