Apple is reportedly exploring a comeback to the enterprise server market, a move that would mark its first foray into the space since discontinuing the Xserve line in 2011. According to The Information, citing sources familiar with the matter, the tech giant is considering building servers powered by its in-house M-series Ultra chips, paired with networking equipment from NVIDIA (NASDAQ: NVDA). The proposed machines would be marketed to AI developers, enterprises, and government clients, with a core focus on enabling customers to run local AI inference on private infrastructure.

The planned servers are said to come in two configurations: a lower-tier version integrating two M8 Ultra chips currently in development, and a higher-end model featuring four M8 Ultra chips in a compute cluster. To address high-speed interconnect challenges across multiple chips, Apple has reportedly held discussions with NVIDIA regarding the adoption of its NVLink Fusion interconnect solution, which encompasses switches, chiplets, and supporting software.
