A parent has taken to social media to challenge the safety protocols at the Atlantis Aquaventure Waterpark, asserting that lifeguards were unresponsive to a child in distress, which nearly resulted in a drowning. The incident, as reported on August 15, has sparked a discussion about the facility's emergency response procedures.
The parent, who booked a six-night suite at the Atlantis Sanya hotel through a travel platform, detailed the terrifying experience. While playing in the waterpark, the parent noticed their child struggling and asked a lifeguard for assistance. According to the account, the lifeguard failed to react, prompting the parent to swim over and rescue the child personally. "If I hadn't seen it, the consequences would have been unthinkable," the parent wrote.
The parent further criticized the hotel's response, stating that after the incident, the management offered only a verbal apology without any formal, written acknowledgment or a plan for corrective action. "For any parent, seeing these lifeguards lined up at the Atlantis waterpark would make you naively believe your child is safe," the parent posted. "I certainly did, until this near-drowning. It's horrifying to think that the so-called safety personnel wouldn't act even when explicitly asked to help. Based on their attitude, I don't believe they take this seriously."
When contacted by media for comment, a representative from the Atlantis Sanya hotel stated that they were not fully aware of the specific details of the incident. The representative confirmed that the complaint would be documented and investigated, and that a relevant staff member would return the call.
