周二，民主党参议员质疑美国纳税人是否在为埃克森美孚在圭亚那的业务运营承担部分费用，圭亚那是该公司最重要的石油项目所在地。
参议员们在致埃克森美孚首席执行官Darren Woods的信中询问，该公司是否在2023年或2024年将圭亚那代为支付的所得税作为外国税收抵免进行申报。埃克森美孚与圭亚那在2016年达成协议，由这个南美国家从其石油收入份额中代为支付埃克森美孚的所得税。
一份独立审计报告显示，埃克森美孚与圭亚那相关的所得税支出在2023年为6.6亿美元，2024年为12亿美元。
参议员们表示，财政部去年提出了一项建议，旨在"防止像埃克森美孚这样的公司通过申报比其他在该国经营但无需为在圭亚那拥有的土地上钻探权利付费的公司更大的美国外国税收抵免来减少其美国税单"。
三位参议员Sheldon Whitehouse、Jeffrey Merkley和Chris Van Hollen并未指控埃克森美孚有任何不当行为。
该公司周一批准了在圭亚那的第七个价值数十亿美元的海上开发项目。
