US Power Grid Faces Record Demand Amid Severe Heatwave

An ongoing heatwave in the eastern United States is pushing the nation's largest power grid to its limits. The electricity demand on the PJM Interconnection grid on July 2nd is likely to surpass the historical peak set in August 2006. Concurrently, rising risks of blackouts and surging power prices have brought renewed widespread attention to the grid's vulnerability.

According to reports, the PJM Interconnection grid serves 13 states from Washington D.C. to Chicago and a population of 67 million. The grid indicated that demand on July 2nd is likely to exceed the previous record peak of 165.563 gigawatts. The Department of Energy has ordered all generating units to operate at maximum capacity, including backup power, marking the second time this emergency measure has been activated this summer.

The heat's impact is affecting daily life and markets. Consolidated Edison, a New York City power company, temporarily cut power to nearly 10,000 customers in southwestern Queens due to equipment failure and requested tens of thousands of customers to voluntarily conserve electricity. In some areas, PJM electricity prices spiked to over $2,500 per megawatt-hour this week. More than 197 million people are under extreme heat warnings or advisories, stretching from Kansas to Maine.

Grid Strain as Demand Nears Capacity Limits

The PJM grid issued a series of emergency alerts this week. If the July 2nd demand is confirmed as a record, it would mean the grid is operating at over 90% of its capacity. However, as temperatures climb, a shortfall in some generation capacity has emerged—approximately 9.5 gigawatts of generating units are offline in the Mid-Atlantic region, including data centers concentrated in Northern Virginia. One gigawatt is roughly equivalent to the output of a traditional nuclear power plant.

It is noteworthy that PJM had previously stated that setting a summer demand record this year was "unlikely, but not impossible." Official final data requires a 60-day accounting of demand response resources for confirmation. Thursday's data showed the instantaneous load between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. was approximately 162.7 gigawatts, but that figure was already somewhat suppressed.

On Friday, with holiday travel reducing some demand, overall electricity usage was expected to ease slightly. However, with hot and humid conditions persisting, cooling demand could climb again. Sustained high-load operation further increases the risk of failures for generating equipment and critical infrastructure.

Reports indicate a strong heatwave has persisted over the eastern US this week, bringing triple-digit Fahrenheit temperatures to multiple cities. New York's Central Park reached 98 degrees Fahrenheit (36.7 Celsius) on Friday afternoon, after hitting 100 degrees Fahrenheit on Thursday, the highest temperature recorded there since 2012. Weather forecasts show the hot and humid conditions are expected to last through the weekend across the eastern half of the country.

The heat has directly impacted Independence Day celebrations. The "America's State Fair" event on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.—a two-week patriotic-themed festival—was forced to close for several hours on Friday due to the heat. Organizers stated on social media that the event would resume in the evening.

Frank Pereira, a senior forecaster at the US Weather Prediction Center, stated, "Today is going to be a pretty rough day," noting that temperatures from the Plains and Midwest to the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast are "well above normal."

Data Center Growth and Extreme Weather Intensify Structural Grid Pressure

This heat crisis is not an isolated event but highlights deeper structural pressures facing the US power grid. Even before this heatwave arrived, major US grids were under sustained pressure from a data center construction boom—an expansion that has broken a two-decade-long stagnation in electricity demand. Northern Virginia, where the PJM grid operates, is a core area of the US "data center alley."

Extreme temperature fluctuations make the grid more prone to failures during peak periods, affecting everything from residential air conditioning to critical scenarios like hospital lighting. In addition to cutting power to some customers, Consolidated Edison requested users to reduce usage of washers, dryers, and microwaves, and to use only one air conditioner if they have two.

Former US Department of Energy official Jigar Shah stated, "We need to treat grid flexibility as part of everyday operations, not just a crisis response tool." Analysts believe this heat stress test will further amplify calls for grid reform, pushing for added generation capacity and improved system flexibility.
