Hong Kong Stock Market Opening: Hang Seng Index Opens 0.6% Lower, Gold Stocks Rise, ZAI LAB Surges Over 8%

The Hang Seng Index opened 0.6% lower at 25,498.39 points on August 12, while the Hang Seng Tech Index fell 0.8% to 4,785.75 points, and the Hang Seng China Enterprises Index dropped 0.57% to 8,479.60 points. Pre-market turnover reached HK$2.17 billion.

Gold stocks showed strength, with Zijin Mining Group Co Ltd (02259) rising over 2%, China Gold International Resources Corp Ltd (02099) gaining over 2%, Lingbao Gold Group Company Ltd (03330) increasing over 2%, Laopu Gold Co Ltd (06181) climbing nearly 2%, and Shandong Gold Mining Co Ltd (01787) advancing over 1%.

Pharmaceutical stocks also gained, led by ZAI LAB (09688) which surged over 8%, while WuXi XDC Cayman Inc (02268) rose over 1%. This move was driven by ZAI LAB's overnight U.S. stock gain of over 10%.

Some AI and semiconductor concept stocks strengthened, with MINIMAX-W (00100) rising nearly 3%, Cambridge Technology (06166) gaining over 2%, Montage Technology (06809) increasing over 2%, and GigaDevice Semiconductor (03986) climbing over 2%. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index rose 0.87% overnight.

Most tech stocks moved lower, with Alibaba Group Holding Ltd (09988) falling over 1%, JD.com Inc (09618) dropping over 1%, NetEase Inc (09999) declining over 1%, Tencent Holdings Ltd (00700) sliding over 1%, Bilibili Inc (09626) decreasing over 1%, Meituan (03690) falling nearly 1%, and Xiaomi Corp (01810) slipping nearly 1%. Hong Kong stocks opened lower today, weighed down by the three major U.S. stock indexes closing down overnight and the China Golden Dragon Index falling 2.94%.
