On November 21, the 2025 annual meeting of the China Classification Society (CCS) Shanghai Regional Committee was successfully held in Shanghai. Over 50 members and representatives from shipping, shipbuilding, supporting industries, and financial insurance sectors attended the event. CCS Vice President Zhang Qingwen delivered a speech, expressing gratitude for the long-standing support from participating organizations and highlighting CCS's achievements in technological innovation, regulatory updates, and safety quality over the past year.
Zhang emphasized that CCS will enhance its three core functions in Shanghai—international ship inspection, technical standard innovation, and global cooperation—while strengthening local technical service capabilities. The society aims to improve its full lifecycle service system and collaborate with committee members to support Shanghai's role in elevating its international shipping hub status and advancing national strategies such as "Transportation Power" and "Maritime Power."
During the meeting, Ju Liqiang, Director of CCS International Business Inspection Management, presented the "CCS 2025 Development Report." Technical reports were also delivered by experts, including Li Lu from the Shanghai Rules & Research Institute, Wu Shunping from the Wuhan Rules & Research Institute, Yan Hao from Shanghai COSCO Heavy Industry, and Li Zhaobao from Shanghai Ocean Shipping. Topics covered MEPC ES.2 special sessions, China's shipping decarbonization innovations, methanol dual-fuel retrofitting for 20,000 TEU container ships, and safety management of methanol-fueled vessels.
In discussions, participants exchanged views on the implications of delayed IMO net-zero framework negotiations, energy-saving technologies, clean energy applications, and supply chain challenges. They explored pathways for green, low-carbon, and digital transformation in shipping and shipbuilding under evolving conditions, offering suggestions for CCS's future development.
Weng Yi, Chairman of the Shanghai Regional Committee and Fleet Captain of COSCO SHIPPING Group, delivered closing remarks. He acknowledged the committee's progress in advancing transportation initiatives, supporting Shanghai's shipping hub development, and fostering industry collaboration. Weng urged members to align with national "dual-carbon" goals, enhance crew competency, and boost competitiveness in new energy and technology while promoting cross-sector cooperation for sustainable industry growth.
