BYD’s April NEV Output Drops 28.56%, Sales Slide 26.02% While Exports Hit 135,098 Units

BYD Company Limited reported a sharp year-on-year contraction in its April 2026 production and sales metrics, underscoring the demand pressures facing China’s largest new-energy vehicle (NEV) maker.

Total NEV production for the month reached 0.32 million units, down 28.56% from 0.39 million a year earlier. Cumulative output for the first four months of 2026 stood at 1.03 million units, versus 1.44 million units in the same period of 2025.

Sales followed a similar trajectory. April deliveries fell 26.02% year on year to 0.32 million units, bringing January-to-April sales to 1.02 million units, 26.02% lower than the 1.38 million units recorded in the prior-year period.

Product Mix • Passenger vehicles continued to dominate, accounting for 314,100 units in April—an annual decline of 26.17%. Battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) fell 23.65% to 156,944 units, while plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) dropped 28.24% to 157,156 units. • Commercial NEV sales totaled 7,023 units, down 16.62% year on year. Within this segment, buses rose 23.54% to 440 units, contrasting with a 19.58% fall in “other” commercial models to 6,583 units.

Exports and Battery Operations Overseas momentum remained resilient: BYD exported 135,098 NEVs in April. On the battery front, installed capacity for NEV power batteries and energy-storage batteries reached 20.98 GWh for the month, lifting the year-to-date figure to 81.19 GWh.
