Shares of Mineral Resources Ltd (MIN.AU) surged 8.70% in intraday trading on Wednesday, following the announcement of a significant lithium partnership with South Korea's POSCO Holdings. The Australian mining company has agreed to sell a 30% stake in its operational lithium business to POSCO for US$765 million, a move that has excited investors and boosted confidence in the company's future prospects.

Under the terms of the agreement, Mineral Resources and POSCO will form a new joint venture that will hold MinRes' 50% ownership in the Wodgina and Mt Marion lithium mines, two of Western Australia's most significant lithium operations. This strategic partnership will give POSCO an indirect 15% interest in each of these projects, while MinRes will retain a 70% interest in the new entity and continue to operate the mines under existing agreements with respective partners Albemarle and Ganfeng Lithium.

The deal, which has been approved by the boards of both companies, is seen as a win-win situation. For Mineral Resources, it provides a substantial cash injection that the company plans to use to repay external debt, strengthen its balance sheet, and position itself for future growth. Meanwhile, POSCO will receive spodumene concentrate proportional to its 30% interest, supporting its plans for new downstream processing facilities. This partnership is expected to help meet the rising global demand for Australian lithium, a critical component in electric vehicle batteries and renewable energy storage systems.
