NAND Flash Supply Shortage Expected to Ease in Second Half of 2027

According to the latest monthly NAND Flash data analysis for July 2026, the AI demand surge in 2026, coupled with limited capacity expansion, has created a tight supply situation in the market. Looking ahead to 2027, demand from the server sector is expected to remain robust. However, with suppliers improving manufacturing processes, overall bit supply growth not slowing down, and the consumer electronics market remaining sluggish, the NAND Flash supply shortage is anticipated to improve in the second half of 2027.

The analysis indicates that in 2026, due to limited existing fab space and a strategic priority on increasing DRAM capacity, suppliers primarily relied on process upgrades to meet NAND Flash demand. The challenge of tight fab space is expected to persist into 2027. It is projected that Korean, American, and Japanese manufacturers will continue upgrading existing processes or expanding production scale at certain facilities to boost market supply. Meanwhile, Chinese manufacturers are set to see a significant capacity increase as new production equipment is gradually installed, with their share of the total NAND Flash bit output expected to rise to nearly 19%.

Key Demand Drivers

On the demand side, the ramp-up of shipments for the new-generation platforms from Intel and AMD in the second half of 2026 is forecast to drive a 17% year-on-year increase in full-year server shipments. In 2027, the deployment of Agentic AI applications is expected to sustain strong demand for general-purpose servers. Furthermore, bottlenecks in server CPU shipments are projected to improve significantly compared to 2026, and memory component supply is expected to stabilize due to long-term agreements (LTAs). Consequently, the year-on-year growth rate for overall server shipments in 2027 is anticipated to expand further.

Weaker Consumer Electronics Demand

In contrast to the strong performance in servers, procurement momentum for smartphones and notebooks continues to weaken. Smartphone production in 2026 is estimated to decline by 15% to 20% year-on-year. For 2027, due to limited overall terminal market recovery and increased consumer price sensitivity, even with AI integration in high-end models supporting some demand, annual production is expected to maintain a year-on-year declining trend, albeit at a narrower rate. For notebooks, following an approximate 10% year-on-year shipment decline in 2026, shipments in 2027 are still projected to see a slight decrease, impacted by high costs for components like memory and CPUs.

Inventory and Supply-Demand Outlook

The analysis notes that while servers now account for over 40% of NAND Flash bit demand, the combined share for smartphones and notebooks remains close to 40%, indicating their continued critical influence on overall demand. Regarding inventory, levels at original manufacturers remain relatively low. Although module manufacturers are experiencing rising inventory due to the ongoing slump in the consumer market, inventory levels for other buyers are still within manageable ranges.

Based on the comprehensive analysis, the gap between NAND Flash supply and demand in terms of bits is projected to be between -4% and -5% in 2026, indicating a shortage scenario. By the second half of 2027, this bit gap is expected to turn positive, with the pressure from tight supply likely to ease.
