National Day Holiday Gives Robots a Prime Season for Going On Duty

This National Day Golden Week, robots have entered a special "on-duty season." From October 1 to 7, the "Robot Wonderful Night" was performed continuously at the Giant Screen Theater of the Guangdong Science Center, with more than 800 robots taking part.

But after the novelty fades, can robots truly stay? One of the difficulties in commercializing embodied intelligence is that once robots truly enter society, the technical challenge is often no longer completing an isolated action, but how to complete work continuously, stably, and safely in an environment full of uncertainty.

Wang Chuang, partner and senior vice president of Zhiyuan and president of its general business unit, said in a media interview that some content that researchers do not consider technically difficult turns out to be more popular with visitors. This means that after robots enter cultural tourism scenarios, the evaluation criteria have also changed; technical indicators in the laboratory are not necessarily equal to the experience for which consumers are willing to linger, interact, or even pay.

Yin Fangming, chairman of Galaxy General, said that embodied intelligence is currently evolving from single skills toward more general task execution capabilities, and when robots go to overseas markets, whether they can combine with local industry needs to form replicable and sustainably operating solutions will become a key issue that must be addressed.

With more and more scenarios, robots are increasingly like real "employees," and the business world's demands on them will naturally become closer to those placed on employees: not occasionally completing a beautiful action, but being able to complete tasks stably. What the National Day Golden Week truly tests may not be whether robots "can become popular," but whether robots can withstand high-frequency use. After the visitors disperse, the lights go out, and the performance ends, whether those robots will continue to work may be the answer truly worth recording in this commercialization test.
