Apple's upcoming iPhone 18 series is facing significant cost pressures. Rising prices for memory, storage, and advanced process chips could push the new model's material costs up by as much as $300, making Apple's pricing strategy a key market focus.
According to an analysis by Counterpoint Research, the material cost for the iPhone 18 Pro Max (12GB+1TB) could increase by about $300 compared to the previous generation, while the cost increase for the 256GB and 512GB base and Pro models is estimated to be between $200 and $250. The research firm expects Apple to adopt a "tiered, asymmetric" pricing approach, concentrating larger price hikes on high-capacity models to soften the impact on entry-level offerings.
To offset cost pressures, Apple will also leverage its services business, supply chain adjustments, and leasing and secondary markets. Analysts believe the current component price increase cycle will last at least 18 months, potentially having a lasting impact on the pricing of future iPhone generations.
Memory and Advanced Processes Drive Up Costs
Counterpoint Research's material cost analysis reveals that the cost increases are not uniform across Apple's different capacities and models. Since high-capacity versions are expected to use more cost-effective NAND solutions, the proportional cost increase is actually higher for mid- and low-capacity models.
The core drivers of cost increases come from two directions. According to Counterpoint Research's monthly memory and storage price tracker, the average price of DRAM has risen 400% over the past 12 months, while the average price of NAND has increased by more than 300%.
Additionally, Apple is shifting to A-series chips based on the 2-nanometer process for the iPhone 18 series, and TSMC's advanced process wafer prices have undergone multiple rounds of increases, further raising Apple's procurement costs.
In terms of supply chain priority, the current allocation order for chip capacity is data centers, automotive, and PCs, with smartphones ranking last, meaning Apple's bargaining power in negotiations with suppliers has been somewhat weakened.
Price Hikes May Be Concentrated at the High End
Facing cost pressures, Counterpoint Research expects Apple to adopt a "tiered, asymmetric" pricing strategy—concentrating larger price increases on high-capacity versions while keeping entry-level price increases relatively moderate, to avoid a major shock to consumers.
The logic behind this strategy is twofold: high-capacity versions benefit from more cost-effective NAND solutions, so nominally larger price increases actually improve margins; meanwhile, keeping entry-level prices relatively low helps Apple maintain price appeal in competition with Android phones.
Analyst Neil Shah at the research firm pointed out that this is fundamentally a strategic choice rather than a pure cost issue. If Apple prioritizes winning over Android users, entry-level price increases will be restrained, and the high-end models will bear more pressure. If it prioritizes protecting profit margins, price increases across all tiers will be more uniform.
Services Business as a Key Buffer
Beyond hardware, the services business may become a crucial tool for Apple to offset cost pressures. Apple's services business already generates an annual revenue of about $120 billion, with high profit margins.
The research firm expects Apple to explore subscription monetization through Apple Intelligence in the future. If a subscription service focused on on-device AI is launched at around $10 per month, it could generate an additional $10 billion to $20 billion in new services revenue in the first year.
However, willingness to pay for Apple Intelligence has yet to be proven, and large-scale commercialization may not materialize until the second year of the iPhone 18's lifecycle.
On the supply chain side, Apple is also pushing for supplier diversification, signing long-term procurement agreements, and continuing to cut costs on non-memory components like displays, cameras, and casings. ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) has been listed as a potential memory supplier, but its actual role remains uncertain.
Additionally, carrier subsidies, leasing programs, and the secondary market may help reduce consumer sensitivity to price increases. If the device usage cycle is extended to 36 to 40 months, a $200 price increase would be spread out to about $5 per month, making the actual payment pressure relatively limited.
Three Key Variables Determine Final Pricing
The market will focus on three signals going forward: first, the price gap between the base iPhone 18 and the high-end model, reflecting Apple's trade-off between market share and profit; second, the subscription pricing and user penetration rate of Apple Intelligence; and third, the progress of Apple's long-term procurement agreements with memory suppliers.
Furthermore, the upgrade to 16GB of RAM in the iPhone 19 and subsequent models, as well as Apple's push with Google for on-device quantization compression of AI models, will also influence memory demand and cost trends over the next two years.
Against the backdrop of component price increases that may last at least 18 months, the price hike for the iPhone 18 may only be the beginning. The real challenge for Apple is finding a new balance between cost, profit, and market share.
