Pinglu Canal Set to Strengthen Maritime Development and Regional Economic Cooperation

During the comprehensive navigational exercise for the Pinglu Canal, vessels participating in the drill entered the Qinzhou Water Service Area in September. This moment highlights the canal's role as a key component of the western land-sea corridor, serving as a vital link for the Belt and Road Initiative. The project plays a major role in enabling Guangxi's maritime development, advancing the modern western development strategy, and supporting stronger ties within the China-ASEAN community.

Guangxi has adopted a broad strategic plan centered on land-sea coordination, regional linkage, and a province-wide push toward maritime growth. The region is developing a "leaf-vein" industrial pattern, which designates the Pinglu Canal Economic Belt as the core and establishes supporting industrial clusters across other parts of the region. This structure leverages the waterway's open corridor advantage to capitalize on the economic benefits offered by the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership. By streamlining customs clearance and facilitating more efficient cross-border trade, the initiative aims to strengthen the development of the China-ASEAN Industrial Cooperation Zone. In parallel, Guangxi is proactively engaging with key national strategies for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, the Yangtze River Economic Belt, and the Hainan Free Trade Port. These efforts promote cross-regional synergy and ensure Guangxi's integration into the new national development framework through coordinated land-sea dynamics and external engagement.

The Pinglu Canal, spanning 134.2 kilometers, is an inland Class I waterway designed to accommodate vessels of up to 5,000 tons. Construction began on August 28, 2022, and the waterway is scheduled to open for navigation on September 16 of this year. As the first state-level integrated river-to-sea canal since the establishment of the People's Republic of China, it represents a major infrastructure milestone. The canal connects inland river systems to the open sea, significantly enhancing the capacity and efficiency of freight movement throughout the region.

Multiple industrial sites across Guangxi are already capitalizing on the canal's proximity, including high-tech manufacturing facilities and automated terminal operations, positioning the region as an increasingly important hub for global commerce.

The development of the Pinglu Canal is expected to bolster the integration of regional industrial supply chains, improving market access for local companies and accelerating Guangxi's role in international trade networks.
