Pinestone Capital Turns Around to HK$2.82 Million Interim Profit as Cost Base Shrinks and Margin Financing Doubles

Bulletin Express
Sep 22

Pinestone Capital Limited reported a return to profitability for the six months ended 30 June 2026, helped by a sharp reduction in operating expenses and a strong rise in margin-financing income.

Revenue and Earnings Group revenue slipped 22.0% year on year to HK$13.19 million (1H 2025: HK$16.88 million), weighed down by a HK$7.25 million contraction in placing and underwriting fees and a HK$1.83 million fall in money-lending interest income. Despite the top-line decline, a 78% cut in other operating expenses to HK$3.59 million and the absence of any tax charge enabled Pinestone to post a net profit of HK$2.82 million, reversing a HK$3.68 million loss recorded a year earlier. Basic and diluted earnings per share came in at HK4.28 cents versus a loss per share of HK9.91 cents in 1H 2025. The board declared no interim dividend.

Segment Performance 1. Margin financing: Interest income more than doubled to HK$6.92 million (1H 2025: HK$3.21 million), underpinned by an 81% increase in average monthly loan balances to HK$133.9 million. 2. Money lending & other secured lending: Income fell 44.4% to HK$2.28 million after two corporate borrowers repaid their loans, reducing period-end loans receivable to HK$22.72 million (30 June 2025: HK$53.30 million). 3. Securities brokerage: Commission income surged 134% to HK$1.36 million, supported by higher market turnover and an expansion in active client accounts to 235 (31 Dec 2025: 201). 4. Placing & underwriting: Fee income dropped to HK$1.68 million from HK$8.93 million, reflecting the absence of bond placements and a lower number of stock deals (five versus fourteen a year earlier).

Cost Dynamics Employee benefit expenses rose 66.0% to HK$6.54 million following headcount growth to 31 (30 June 2025: 21). This was offset by a HK$12.46 million reduction in compliance, professional, agency and other administrative costs, driving total operating expenses down 49.5% to HK$10.13 million.

Financial Position • Cash and bank balances stood at HK$38.19 million (31 Dec 2025: HK$41.81 million). • Current ratio remained healthy at 3.30x, though lower than 15.13x at year-end due to higher trade payables. • Lease liabilities totalled HK$1.51 million, leaving the gearing ratio unchanged at 0.01x. • Net assets edged up to HK$198.48 million (31 Dec 2025: HK$195.66 million).

Corporate Actions and Post-Period Event On 29 July 2026, Pinestone mandated Pinestone Securities to place up to 12.18 million new shares under a general mandate at HK$5.22 each. The transaction completed on 25 August 2026 with 7.89 million shares placed, raising HK$39.10 million net. Proceeds are earmarked 40% for margin-financing expansion, 10% for money-lending activities, 40% for virtual-asset licence application and AI initiatives, and 10% for general working capital.

Governance Updates During the half, Wang Han transitioned from executive to non-executive director, while Wong Chun Yip Gavin joined the board on 10 August 2026 as an independent non-executive director and chair of the audit committee.

Outlook Statement Management expects Hong Kong’s equity market to remain volatile but sees scope for re-rating amid improving corporate earnings and capital inflows. The company plans to pursue cautious expansion in margin financing, money lending and virtual-asset related services while continuing its cost-discipline measures.
