Great news for Hainan's aviation sector: the Qionghai Boao International Airport has officially upgraded its airfield classification to 4E, a significant milestone in its operational capabilities.

This new rating means the airport can now accommodate large wide-body aircraft such as the Boeing 747 and Airbus A340, marking a major advancement in its comprehensive support capacity.

According to an official announcement released by the airport on September 2, 2026, the upgrade provides solid backing for expanding route networks, enhancing operational efficiency, and supporting the development of the Hainan Free Trade Port.

While some external platforms are still in the process of updating their information, travelers are advised to refer to official sources for the most accurate details.

Located in Qionghai City, Hainan Province, the Qionghai Boao International Airport sits 12 kilometers from the city center and 15 kilometers from the permanent site of the Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference. The airfield features a 4E classification with a 3,200-meter runway.

Hainan also hosts other major airports, including the Haikou Meilan International Airport, which began operations on May 25, 1999, and serves as one of China's key domestic trunk airports. Following the launch of its second-phase project on December 2, 2021, the airport entered a new era of dual-terminal and dual-runway operations.

Additionally, the Sanya Phoenix International Airport, operational since July 1, 1994, holds a 4E airfield classification and can support fully loaded Boeing 747-400 aircraft. It currently boasts 23.19 square meters of terminal space across multiple facilities and a total of 88 parking stands.
