South Korea's KOSPI Falls 1.98% as Chip Giants Samsung Electronics and SK hynix Come Under Pressure

South Korea's KOSPI index closed sharply lower today (October 7, 2026), dropping 1.98% to 6,803.90 points, marking its second consecutive trading day of declines.

Although the three major U.S. stock indices repeatedly hit new highs overnight, the Seoul market was constrained by domestic capital outflows and valuation corrections in technology stocks, failing to sustain the optimism from overseas markets.

Macro Headwinds: Strong U.S., Weak Korea, and Elevated Bond Yields

The core issues dragging the index sharply lower today were mainly concentrated in two areas. First, accelerating foreign capital withdrawal: compared to global funds continuing to pour into U.S. large-cap AI funds, foreign capital is persistently flowing out of the South Korean domestic market. Second, rising bond yields: South Korean government bond yields generally moved higher today (the 3-year government bond yield rose 1.7 basis points to 3.950%), with elevated risk-free rates severely suppressing the valuation performance of technology growth stocks.

Weighted Stocks: Q3 Earnings Season Approaching, Semiconductor Duo Both Decline

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. fell 1.29% to close at 268,500 won. SK hynix dropped 2.82% to close at 1,720,000 won. As the third-quarter earnings window approaches, the market harbors concerns about whether demand for AI chips such as high-bandwidth memory (HBM) will face an inflection point in growth momentum, directly triggering profit-taking and cautious selling in chip heavyweight stocks.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.: Although the market expects the company's third-quarter preliminary earnings, due to be released this week, to show significant profit growth, Samsung Electronics shares failed to hold up today under the drag of an industry-wide valuation pullback, continuing the weakening momentum from yesterday and declining further.

SK hynix: As a core supplier in Nvidia's HBM supply chain, the stock not only faced technical selling pressure today but also bore the direct impact of net foreign selling. The share price remained sluggish throughout the day, with losses widening further in the afternoon, becoming the main driver dragging the composite index into a deep decline.

South Korean domestic analysis institutions noted that ahead of Friday's key U.S. non-farm payroll data release, fear of heights and risk-aversion sentiment remain dominant among Seoul stock market investors.
