Sep 22

On September 22, ZHAOJIN MINING fell 3.07% in regular trading, trading at HK$19.26, with turnover of HK$134 million. The decline came as the broader gold sector remained under sustained pressure following the Federal Reserve's hawkish rate hike.

On September 17, the Fed raised rates by 25 basis points to 3.75%-4.00%, its first hike since July 2023. The latest dot plot showed 16 out of 18 officials projecting at least one more rate hike before year-end, with the median fed funds rate forecast for end-of-year revised up from 3.8% to 4.1%. Fed Chair Waller stated that inflation remains elevated, reinforcing expectations that the tightening cycle is far from over. Following the decision, the U.S. dollar index reclaimed the 100 level, and spot gold fell below $4,300/oz.

The gold sector broadly weakened, with ZIJIN GOLD INTL down 5.1%, LINGBAO GOLD down 5.08%, SD GOLD down 2.77%, CHINAGOLDINTL down 2.31%, and CHIFENG GOLD down 0.53%. Analysts noted that while the rate hike itself was largely priced in, the upward revision in the policy rate path continues to weigh on non-yielding gold assets through higher real interest rates and a stronger dollar.
