On May 1, Qingdao Port in Shandong province quickly entered a peak period of operational activity. Numerous large ocean-going vessels arrived at the port in succession, with more than 80 ships gathered across its five major port areas. All key berths were operating at full capacity, while over 4,000 employees remained at their posts across multiple fronts, including cargo handling and construction projects. This dedication vividly demonstrated the spirit that "labor is great and honorable," directly reflecting the steady improvement in China's foreign trade and the ongoing recovery of its economy. At the container terminal, more than 20 container ships from routes connecting Europe, Southeast Asia, Africa, and Central and South America were simultaneously handled. The sounds of ship horns, radio communications, and machinery overlapped continuously, creating a scene of intense production activity. During the loading and unloading operations of the ultra-large container vessel COSCO SHIPPING Aquarius, Qingdao Port meticulously coordinated equipment and manpower while optimizing operational procedures. The port completed handling 16,343 TEUs in just 26.7 hours, setting a new world record for berth productivity on the Ocean Alliance’s AEU1 Europe route. Berth efficiency reached 320.55 natural containers per hour, fully showcasing the leading capabilities of Chinese ports in handling ultra-large vessels. At the same time, the 399.8-meter-long COSCO SHIPPING Libra docked smoothly and handled approximately 7,900 TEUs. The vessel also loaded two exported bullet train car bodies bound for Hamburg, Germany, and one generator support destined for Rotterdam. The single-vessel operational efficiency reached 207.3 natural containers per hour, achieving outstanding performance in large vessel handling during the holiday period. The fully automated container terminal continued to demonstrate the advantages of smart technology, assisting key vessels such as the MSC Camille and the Hyundai Unity in departing safely two hours ahead of schedule. Container throughput at the terminal increased by 3.7% compared to the same period last year. During the holiday, Qingdao Port is expected to welcome several more ultra-large container vessels. The passenger vessel New Golden Bridge 5 will continue to provide convenient, efficient, and comfortable travel services for inbound and outbound passengers, with total passenger trips expected to exceed 2,000. These efforts highlight the port’s dual focus on advancing both passenger services and cargo operations.
