Double Harvest From a Single Cornfield

While pure corn cultivation continues to set new yield records, the adoption of soybean-corn strip intercropping is unlocking greater productivity from the same plot of land, offering mountain farmland the potential for dual harvests on a single acre.

As early as September 1st, agricultural experts from the provincial department were invited to conduct field yield measurements at a 100-mu demonstration site in Baiyanjing Village, Jiuba Town, Tongzi County, Zunyi City. During the assessment, three representative plots—located in the upper, middle, and lower sections of the demonstration area—were randomly selected for actual harvest and measurement. Results showed an average soybean yield of 115.26 kilograms per mu and a corn yield of 557.96 kilograms per mu, successfully meeting the benchmark of "no reduction in corn output, with an added season of soybean income."

A representative from the Provincial Crop Technology Extension Station noted that the successful performance of the high-yield soybean-corn strip intercropping demonstration field demonstrates the model's vast potential to enhance land utilization and boost overall grain and oil crop production capacity. It provides valuable technical experience and data support for large-scale promotion in similar ecological regions across the province.

The soybean variety used in the demonstration area was Qindou 12, while the corn variety was Zhengda 659. Chen Jiaqin, director of the Soybean and Peanut Research Office at the Provincial Academy of Agricultural Sciences' Oil Crops Institute, explained that Qindou 12 is an independently bred local variety, acting as an "all-rounder" for mountain cultivation. With high yields and broad adaptability, it pairs well with tall-stalk crops like corn, enabling spatial complementarity and stacking advantages to double the efficiency of a single acre.

Moving forward, the province plans to thoroughly summarize the successful experiences from the high-yield competition and continue advancing the technical promotion of the "Four Good Integrations, One Increase and Five Reforms" strategy. Simultaneously, efforts will be made to refine the standardized procedures for soybean-corn strip intercropping, leveraging technology to fortify the food security barrier and drive high-quality development of the province's grain and oil industry.
