Golden October brings a bumper harvest of all grains. At present, corn, rice, soybeans and other grain crops blanket the fields, and the land of Changchun has once again sounded the prelude to the autumn harvest.

Early in the morning on October 6, in Yongde Village, Qiangang Township, Nong'an County, the large combine harvesters of the Nongyuan Agricultural Machinery Cooperative rolled into the autumn harvest plots, completing harvesting, ear picking, loading and transport, and straw chopping in one smooth sequence. Person in charge Li Rui explained that the six-row harvester is equipped with an electronic control system, and its hydraulic travel doubles efficiency, harvesting 15 mu of corn per hour; the cooperative adopts conservation tillage technology, and its corn cobs are large and firm, with a yield of more than 1,000 kilograms per mu. The autumn harvest area covers nearly 6,000 mu, and with full mechanization, the autumn harvest work can be completed in about 20 days.

The 2026 Central Document No. 1 proposed "steadily developing grain and oil production," and the Municipal Party Committee's rural work conference required "stabilizing area, raising per-unit yield, and strengthening the foundation." As an important national commercial grain production base, Changchun City has thoroughly implemented the strategy of "storing grain in the land and storing grain in technology," solidly advanced Jilin Province's "hundred-billion-jin grain" production capacity construction project, and kept the city's grain crop sowing area stable at around 25 million mu, including 21.54 million mu of corn, 2.53 million mu of rice, and 664,600 mu of soybeans.

Recently, the city issued the "Guiding Opinions on the Autumn Harvest of Major Grain Crops in Changchun City," adhering to early deployment, early preparation, and early arrangement. It guides timely autumn harvesting according to local conditions and by zone and category, starting with early-maturing, hillock, and prematurely aging plots, followed by low-lying and late-maturing plots, to ensure that autumn grain is harvested as fully as possible and every grain is returned to the granary. A relevant person in charge of the Municipal Agriculture and Rural Affairs Bureau introduced that corn is encouraged to be harvested later at the appropriate time, with a delay of 5 to 10 days being suitable, to promote grain dehydration and increase grain weight; rice reaches its suitable harvest period when more than 95% of the glumes have turned yellow and closed and the moisture content has dropped to 15% to 28%; soybeans should be harvested immediately after maturity, with a moisture content below 18% being appropriate.

Good news has come in from various places: the Minnong Machinery Planting Cooperative in Yushu City has achieved a bumper harvest of 750 mu of contracted high-quality rice; the Liu He Agricultural Mechanization Cooperative in Jiutai District used a grain harvester equipped with Beidou navigation to bring in a bumper harvest of 15,000 mu of corn; Chaluokou Town in Dehui City promoted the "rice-shrimp-crab-duck" symbiosis model and achieved a bumper harvest of 28,200 mu of high-quality rice; and the Gancheng Cooperative in Gongzhuling City harvested more than 1,800 mu of fresh corn.

During the autumn harvest period, the city is expected to deploy nearly 140,000 units of various agricultural machinery. Agriculture departments at all levels will reasonably dispatch agricultural machinery and tools and organize cross-regional operations to ensure that the mechanical needs of the autumn harvest are met. The Municipal Agriculture and Rural Affairs Bureau stated that corn harvesting should dynamically adjust operating parameters based on factors such as machine feed volume and crop density; rice should determine operating parameters according to variety, plot flatness, and other factors; and soybeans should avoid dew and midday high temperatures to reduce pod shattering and grain loss.

Next, the city will organize agricultural technology extension personnel to go down to the front lines of autumn harvest production, carry out technical training and guidance services, and ensure that all autumn harvest measures are implemented in detail, safeguarding a bountiful harvest.
