Trump Appoints Clayton to Lead AI Task Force Amid Safety Concerns

As rapid advances in artificial intelligence raise worries about its safety risks, U.S. President Donald Trump has announced the appointment of Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton to help lead a White House artificial intelligence task force.

Clayton is the most prominent figure mentioned by Trump in a social media post announcing the creation of the task force. Trump said the group will coordinate the U.S. government's work on artificial intelligence, including engagement with consumers and companies developing AI.

People familiar with the matter said last week that Trump was expected to name Clayton, who is also his golfing partner, as the next head of AI affairs. Earlier reports said Clayton's leadership role on the task force is effectively that position.

Clayton has served as Director of National Intelligence since July. After Senate confirmation, he now oversees the sprawling U.S. intelligence apparatus.

Trump said other leaders of the task force include Deputy Secretary of Defense Andrew Ferguson, Chief Technology Officer Emil Michael, and Office of Personnel Management Director Scott Kupor. They will report to Trump and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles.

Trump named the group the "Super Intelligence Task Force." Reports say the task force must prepare a report within 120 days.
