Ferrari NV has introduced its inaugural fully electric vehicle—a five-seater priced at €550,000 (approximately $640,000)—marking a departure from the sports car manufacturer's combustion-engine heritage. The unveiling event held in Rome on Sunday concluded a three-phase reveal for the model, named the Ferrari Luce. The process began last year with a showcase of its core technology, followed by an interior preview.
The Luce delivers power equivalent to over 1,000 horsepower, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 2.5 seconds—faster than Ferrari's V12-powered Purosangue SUV. Its top speed exceeds 310 km/h.
Prior to this launch, Ferrari disclosed long-term targets last year that disappointed investors and raised questions about how it would balance electric technology with internal combustion engine models, which remain central to the brand. The company's 2030 plan now halves the expected share of fully electric vehicles to 20% of its lineup, while targeting combustion models at double that proportion.
The Luce represents a significant test case: Ferrari must demonstrate that an electric vehicle can align with its model of limited supply, high pricing, and emotional appeal, while also expanding the product range beyond traditional two- and four-seat sports cars. The model's pricing indicates that CEO Benedetto Vigna has no intention of sacrificing the brand's exclusivity to boost sales volume.
The Luce will test whether the Italian automaker's formula remains effective without the roar of an internal combustion engine, particularly among affluent buyers who seek supercars that retain or increase in value over time. Residual value (second-hand worth) for electric vehicles remains a concern in this segment. Lamborghini's delay in launching its first EV underscores the challenge luxury carmakers face in convincing customers to forgo the sound and mechanical feel of combustion engines.
Ferrari has repeatedly stated it will continue to offer customers a diverse choice of internal combustion, hybrid, and fully electric powertrains. Its strategy remains focused on product portfolio, personalization, and disciplined quota allocation—not on selling higher volumes. This discipline is central to the Ferrari model. Like successful luxury peers such as Hermès and Rolex, the company has long relied on waitlists and carefully managed supply to defend its exclusivity. Scarcity is not a byproduct of its business development but a tool Ferrari uses to sustain demand and pricing.
This model insulates Ferrari from challenges faced by higher-volume European automakers, which are grappling with competition from a wave of cheaper Chinese electric vehicles. The Italian company's market capitalization leads all European carmakers, despite an annual production of fewer than 14,000 vehicles—far below the Volkswagen Group's nearly 9 million units. Nevertheless, its stock price has fallen 27% over the past 12 months amid concerns about the strength of global luxury demand.
Ferrari does not view the Luce as a compromise to regulations or competitors but rather as an attempt to prove that electric technology can deliver the performance and character demanded by the brand's enthusiasts. The company's message is that electrification should enable new design and driving possibilities, not simply replace an engine with a battery.
"The Ferrari Luce is not a response to change," Executive Chairman John Elkann told reporters at Sunday's event. "It is a deliberate decision to lead the future."
The electric platform has allowed Ferrari to incorporate five seats for the first time—a feat impossible with its traditional transaxle layout (front-mid engine paired with a rear-mounted gearbox). The Luce will also offer 600 liters (approximately 21 cubic feet) of trunk space, enough for two golf bags or three large suitcases.
The car's positioning is closer to high-performance electric grand tourers like the Porsche Taycan than to two-seat electric hypercars, though Ferrari's luxury positioning and scarcity model make direct comparisons imperfect. Most Taycan variants are priced significantly below the Luce's expected cost.
Sound presents another key challenge. Ferrari stated it spent five years and 40,000 kilometers of track testing to develop the car's acoustic character. Instead of artificially synthesizing or simulating combustion engine noise, the company captures the hum of the electric motors via sensors on the rear axle, then processes and amplifies it. This approach aims to address one of the primary concerns surrounding Ferrari's electrified models: whether a brand historically famed for engine roar can maintain an emotional connection with users in the absence of internal combustion sound.
