Apple Reshapes MacBook Strategy: Scraps Foldable and Midsize OLED Plans, Introduces New 13.8-Inch Model

According to the latest analysis from research firm Omdia, Apple has halted development on two MacBook projects, including a large-scale foldable model and a midsize OLED version. This decision is part of a broader recalibration of its product lineup, though the company remains committed to integrating OLED technology across its MacBook and iPad ranges.

The canceled foldable MacBook, which was previously rumored to be delayed, would have featured a screen measuring between 16.1 and 18 inches when fully opened. Earlier reports had described this device as a large-screen foldable iPad rather than a MacBook. Meanwhile, the other shelved OLED MacBook was slated to sport a 14.4-inch to 16.1-inch display, positioning it between the standard MacBook Pro and the foldable concept. With both projects scrapped, the 14.3-inch to 16.3-inch segment will remain occupied solely by the MacBook Pro series.

Although Apple's overarching goal of bringing OLED displays to its MacBook lineup has not changed, the timeline and product definitions are undergoing adjustments. As part of this revised strategy, the company plans to introduce a new 13.8-inch MacBook, which will fill the gap between the existing LCD-based MacBook Air and the upcoming OLED MacBook Pro. This model, expected to launch in 2029, will adopt next-generation OLED display technology, including LTPO+ backplanes, under-display cameras, and color filter encapsulation, with potential support for touch sensing functionality.

In addition to the new 13.8-inch device, the 14.3-inch and 16.3-inch OLED MacBook Pro models—sometimes referred to as "MacBook Ultra"—are projected to arrive between the second half of 2026 and early 2027. Omdia notes that the current mini-LED MacBook Pro will not be discontinued immediately and is expected to coexist with the OLED versions through at least 2028.
