Chaoyang Park Central Island · Shell Theater, Langyuan Station's Ontime Theater, Century Theater Small Auditorium... Beijing's Chaoyang District recently added 11 new performance spaces, bringing the district's total to 31, ranking among the highest in the city. These new venues are located in commercial areas, cultural and creative parks, and along waterfronts, deeply integrating artistic scenes into the city's daily life.

The 11 new performance spaces each have distinct characteristics. Among them, the Chaoyang Park Central Island · Shell Theater, inspired by "pearls and shells," features a stage and audience area of over 500 square meters that can accommodate 1,500 to 2,000 people, making it Beijing's first outdoor water-stage venue. The Century Theater Small Auditorium, operating for over thirty years, has hosted more than 2,000 performances and continues to introduce international productions. The Weibo IN Diamond Center boasts a 1,800-square-meter pillar-free space equipped with professional live broadcasting systems. All three venues are situated along the Liangma River Cultural and Economic Belt, forming a waterfront performance matrix that adds a strong artistic atmosphere to the area.

Cultural and creative parks emerging from urban renewal have become important carriers for these new performance spaces. The Ontime Theater in Langyuan Station focuses on "professional functions + diverse scenarios," with its 2,359-square-meter space adaptable for audiences of 300 to 1,500 people, suitable for avant-garde theater, brand launches, and art exhibitions. The Yu Club performance space in Langyuan Vintage, converted from an old factory building, features an industrial-style venue accommodating 1,000 people and integrates immersive drama with Kunqu opera performances and theater festivals, creating a "performance + industry + consumption" composite ecosystem. The 1919 LIVEHOUSE in Sanjianfang Township incorporates a "1-ISA immersive sound system," with its 1,300-square-meter space achieving a 360-degree panoramic sound field, setting a technical benchmark for professional music performances.

These new performance spaces are also becoming cultural landmarks within commercial districts. The Little Shakespeare Drama Art Space inside Dongba Wanda Plaza, founded by experienced theater professionals, combines drama performances with artistic experiences, offering a "one-stop" art and lifestyle destination for residents. The 024 Little White Building at the north entrance of Sanlitun Taikoo Li, guided by the concept of "timeless experiences without boundaries," features five floors blending morning coffee, lunch banquets, evening drinks, and impromptu concerts, creating a 24-hour lifestyle complex.

Traditional performance venues and cultural tourism integration projects are also exploring diverse possibilities. The National Music Hall, revitalized by the China National Traditional Orchestra, now includes multiple functions such as performances, exhibitions, educational outreach, cultural exchanges, and creative incubation.

With the recent addition of 11 venues, Chaoyang District has now recognized a total of 31 new performance spaces, covering various types including theaters, livehouses, and multi-functional complexes, forming a preliminary cluster that is well-distributed, diverse, and distinctive. These venues showcase the rich cultural landscape of Chaoyang District.

Among them, the Mahua FunAge Immersive Performance Space · Flower World integrates immersive performances, music drama bars, and script-based games within a nearly 4,000-square-meter area, becoming a one-stop entertainment destination for young people. The Art Space of Love & Music operates with dual spaces—a Time-Space Theater and an Urban Concert Hall—hosting over 1,000 performances annually. The Xiaoke Theater, based in the 751 Fashion Design Plaza, focuses on original Chinese musicals with more than 240 shows per year. The China Puppet Art Theater Heritage Experience Base-Museum combines intangible cultural heritage displays, puppet experiences, and art education, allowing visitors to view, perform, and learn.

Several performance spaces repurposed from the dual Olympic legacy continue to generate momentum. Venues such as the National Stadium, the Ice Ribbon Performance Art Space, and the Nest ∞ Bird's Nest Performance Complex host top-tier competitions and large-scale performances post-Games. The Olympic Competition Hall, a core area of the Water Cube, has held thousands of major events including the APEC gala dinner and Weibo Night.

In recent years, Chaoyang District has continued to develop its "Capital of Performances" initiative, implementing measures to optimize approval processes and expand "performance+" services, fostering a cultural atmosphere that encourages "tourism through performances in Chaoyang." In 2025, the district hosted over 20,000 commercial performances, generating ticket revenues exceeding 2.7 billion yuan and driving regional consumption past 17 billion yuan, demonstrating strong economic momentum in the performance sector.

Spatially, Chaoyang District focuses on the core "Sanlitun-Liangma River International Cultural Performance Zone," linking three distinctive performance clusters in "Sanlitun-Chaowai" with four dynamic performance areas in the "Olympic, CBD, Wangjing Jiuxianqiao, and southern regions," creating a comprehensive performance network embedded into the urban fabric.

In terms of industrial integration, "performance + cruises" have made the Liangma River's "Sound of Music" themed boats a popular consumer attraction; "performance + esports" explores new tech-integrated scenarios; and "performance + markets" activate trendy landmarks like Langyuan Station. The city's first AIGC audio-visual industry innovation center has been completed and put into use, while the Panjiayuan "Beijing Super Live" Theater uses 5G+8K ultra-high-definition technology to connect with the National Centre for the Performing Arts, allowing residents to enjoy national-level performances locally. The large-scale concert economy has been particularly notable, with 129 major performances in 2025 attracting 3.64 million attendees.

On the policy front, Chaoyang District has introduced support measures to promote the integration of culture, commerce, tourism, and sports, offering up to 3 million yuan in funding for eight categories of projects including large-scale performances and high-traffic exhibitions. The district has also streamlined approval processes through a "green channel" for performances and simplified filing procedures for large events. Additionally, 15,000 subsidized tickets for quality performances have been distributed, bringing performance services directly to grassroots communities.
