根据Redfin最新数据，美国婴儿潮一代的空巢家庭持有三居室及以上户型房产的数量，几乎是有孩千禧家庭的两倍。生活在1至2名成人家庭中的婴儿潮一代，持有全美28%的三居室及以上住宅；而家庭成员达3名成人以上的婴儿潮家庭，则额外持有7%的大户型房产——后者很可能由成年子女与父母同住构成。相较之下，有子女同住的千禧一代仅持有16%的大户型住宅。
Redfin指出，当前市场上适合千禧家庭需求的大户型住宅供应严重不足，部分原因在于适合老年人 downsizing（缩小居住规模）的实惠小户型房源稀缺。在美国许多地区，高昂的房价正将年轻家庭挤出房地产市场。
