Technical Indicators Suggest Bullish Outlook for US Solar Stocks

In recent trading, certain individual stocks within the US solar sector have shown some positive technical signals following earlier corrections, drawing market attention.

Looking at the overall sector performance, the Invesco Solar ETF (TAN) rose 0.93% to $38.435, maintaining a year-to-date cumulative gain of over 20%. Within the sector, performance among leading stocks has been mixed. Shares of Enphase Energy (ENPH) rose more than 4% at one point in early July, largely moving in tandem with the broader solar sector rebound. This movement was also supported by Wells Fargo raising its price target for peer First Solar, which helped lift market sentiment.

On the news front, the US Department of Commerce is investigating imports of polysilicon, a key material for solar panels. The findings of this investigation are expected to be released as early as the beginning of August. The market views that a favorable outcome could potentially improve the polysilicon supply for domestic US solar manufacturers and push up the price of solar modules, leading to a revaluation of the entire US solar industry. Investors are positioning ahead of the investigation's conclusion.

However, macro-level policy pressures on the sector persist. Previous reports indicated that the US government is drafting a potential ban on imports of foreign-made inverters, citing concerns that China could use such equipment to disrupt power supplies. Although industry insiders have noted the proposal could be modified or shelved, the policy uncertainty continues to weigh on sector sentiment.

From a technical perspective, some solar stocks are showing signs of being oversold following recent pullbacks, suggesting the possibility of a short-term technical rebound. Nevertheless, several institutions have cautioned that the sector as a whole remains in a consolidation pattern, with capital flows not yet forming a clear, unified bullish consensus. Investors are advised to monitor the holding of key support levels and await further clarity on the policy front.
