SGX Group announced on Jun, 10 2026 that market activity on its platforms reached multi-year highs in May, supported by broad-based participation in equities, foreign exchange and commodity derivatives.
Securities turnover rose 70% year on year to 45.8 billion Singapore dollars, while securities daily average value increased 79% to 2.4 billion Singapore dollars, the highest level since Oct, 2007.
Derivatives trading volume grew 20% from a year earlier to 30.5 million contracts. Daily average volume climbed 27% to 1.6 million contracts, marking the third-largest monthly tally on record.
The Straits Times Index advanced 3.5% month on month in May, hitting an all-time high of 5,072 on May, 19 2026. Exchange-traded funds tracking the index recorded their 15th straight month of net inflows, adding 129 million Singapore dollars in May and 687 million Singapore dollars year to date. Trading in small- and mid-cap shares (excluding REITs) saw securities daily average value jump 24% from April and more than fourfold from a year earlier, with institutional investors posting cumulative inflows exceeding 800 million Singapore dollars over the past 12 months.
Overall investor activity expanded, led by institutions, whose securities daily average value grew by 184 million Singapore dollars month on month. Retail trading rose 11% from April to a 13-year high, bringing cumulative retail net inflows for the first five months of 2026 to more than 1.5 billion Singapore dollars.
Capital-raising momentum continued as JustCo Holdings Limited debuted on the Mainboard on May, 22 2026. Catalist-listed firms Lum Chang Creations Limited, CNMC Goldmine Holdings Limited and Koh Brothers Eco Engineering Limited announced plans to transfer to the Mainboard, while secondary placements by Hong Leong Asia Ltd. and Aspial Lifestyle Limited raised a combined 316 million Singapore dollars.
In derivatives, demand for India equity risk-management tools remained firm. Daily average volume in GIFT Nifty 50 Index Futures and Options increased 6% month on month to 112,894 contracts, with open interest climbing 12% to a record 290,377 contracts (US$13.7 billion notional).
Foreign-exchange futures trading stayed active as participants managed Asian currency exposure. Daily average volume across all listed FX futures rose 29.6% year on year to 505,864 lots (US$29 billion notional), while average open interest expanded 18.9% to 544,651 lots (US$31.5 billion notional). The KRW/USD mini contract was most active during European afternoon and U.S. morning hours, and open interest in TWD/USD futures grew 37% from April.
Commodities also advanced, with daily average volume up 4.7% year on year, buoyed by iron ore, forward freight agreements and SICOM rubber contracts. Year-to-date average open interest through May increased 20.6% from the same period last year, and container FFA volumes hit a record 2,568 contracts.
