More than 1,400 employees of U.S. cloud computing giant Salesforce have signed a collective letter urging CEO Marc Benioff to abandon potential business dealings with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), according to informed sources.
The letter states, "We are deeply concerned by recent media reports indicating that Salesforce is pitching artificial intelligence technology to ICE, aimed at helping the agency 'quickly' recruit 10,000 new employees and screen whistleblower hotline reports."
The correspondence calls on Benioff to cancel "all ongoing promotional activities or opportunity arrangements targeting ICE enforcement and recruitment efforts" and to issue a public statement demanding the removal of masked agents from U.S. cities.
This letter from Salesforce employees represents the latest instance of tech workers expressing concern over the use of their company's services by U.S. immigration enforcement agencies.
Earlier on Tuesday, Benioff joked at an employee gathering in Las Vegas that ICE would also be attending the event. This incident led to employees criticizing his remarks on the internal Slack forum.
Signatories of the joint letter have demanded that Salesforce clarify to employees which services it provides to ICE and "pause or prohibit infrastructure, AI systems, or services that could support the scaling of ICE operations."
