Chinese artificial intelligence startup Moonshot AI is reportedly exploring a dual listing on both the Hong Kong and Shanghai stock exchanges, a move designed to secure additional funding and elevate its brand recognition, according to two sources familiar with the matter.
After holding discussions with investors in July regarding the specifics of a Hong Kong initial public offering, the company has since signaled its intention to pursue a subsequent mainland China listing. A second source indicated that the mainland listing could target the Shanghai Stock Exchange's STAR Market, which is known for its focus on technology enterprises, with preliminary talks potentially beginning in the near term.
The STAR Market has recently drawn a cohort of prominent Chinese tech firms, including ChangXin Memory Technologies and Unitree Robotics, while also awaiting the listing of notable names such as DeepSeek and Yangtze Memory Technologies. The sources suggested that the relatively weak performance of AI stocks in Hong Kong and a crowded pipeline of listing applications there may be prompting Moonshot AI to consider the dual-city approach.
Moonshot AI has already confidentially submitted its Hong Kong IPO application, with ambitions to debut as early as the first quarter of 2027. Reports from last week indicated the company is also conducting a final pre-IPO funding round, which could value it at approximately $50 billion.
A critical prerequisite before the IPO involves dismantling its variable interest entity offshore structure. The company notified shareholders as early as May of its plans to initiate this process, though sources noted the restructuring has yet to be completed.
As competition intensifies among global frontier AI models, Moonshot AI's accelerated fundraising efforts reflect a quickening pace of capital accumulation. The company's annual recurring revenue, a key performance metric calculated by annualizing current monthly subscription income, is experiencing sustained growth. A July research note from Nomura projected that Moonshot AI's ARR would reach $1 billion by year-end, roughly doubling the estimated $400 million to $500 million expected by mid-2026.
Additionally, reports from last month suggested that Moonshot AI is exploring revenue-sharing partnerships with overseas cloud service providers including Amazon, Microsoft, and Google. These platforms would host the Kimi K3 model and could receive up to a 30 percent cut from related service revenues.
