Apple Inc. is preparing a comprehensive refresh of its Mac lineup, aiming to leverage the surging demand for high-performance computing devices driven by the artificial intelligence revolution.
The company intends to launch new iterations of every Mac model, including long-anticipated updates to its desktop computers, several laptops, and a redesigned MacBook Pro, throughout this autumn and the following year, according to informed sources.
The rollout of new computers is set to commence with an updated entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro, which will be among the initial Macs equipped with a new M6 processor, alongside the first new iMac models in two years, said the individuals, who requested anonymity as the products are not yet public.
The Mac business has been experiencing a revival, with sales expected to increase for a third consecutive year. The computers have recently attracted a user base among those running computationally demanding AI applications. Concurrently, a shortage of memory chips has pressured manufacturing and compelled Apple to increase prices.
A spokesperson for Apple, headquartered in Cupertino, California, did not provide a comment.
Development of the refreshed iMacs and the new base-model MacBook Pro, which resembles the current 14-inch design, is finished, but shipments are not anticipated until the autumn season. The new MacBook Pro carries the internal code name J804, while the updated iMacs are identified as J833 and J834.
The most significant upcoming model in the pipeline is a premium 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook featuring a novel design and a touch screen utilizing OLED display technology—both firsts for the Mac line. OLED, which stands for organic light-emitting diode, provides richer colors and is used in iPhones and iPad Pro models.
This new MacBook series, internally referred to as K114 and K116, remains scheduled for release between late this year and early next year. Apple is currently testing these laptops with macOS version 27.1, which is planned for a consumer launch at the end of October.
These laptops will offer M5 Pro and M5 Max chip options, similar to those in the MacBook Pros released in March, as previously reported. The company is already developing subsequent models planned for rollout between late 2027 and early 2028, which will incorporate M7 Pro and M7 Max chips.
