On April 10th, XPENG (09868) and FUYAO GLASS jointly held an event at the FUYAO glass campus in Fuzhou titled "A New Global Benchmark for Dimming Privacy Glass - The Mass Production Delivery of the First AI Dimming Privacy Glass for the XPENG GX." The event marked the official launch and initial mass production delivery of what the companies describe as the strongest AI dimming privacy glass in the industry. Key figures present at the delivery ceremony included Mr. Yu Peng, Vice President of XPENG's Automotive Technology Center, and Mr. Jiang Bingming, Vice President of FUYAO Group.
This innovative glass will first be featured on the XPENG GX, the company's new flagship technology SUV designed for the era of physical AI. It represents a generational leap from "functional glass" to "AI glass," establishing a new global benchmark with its industry-leading dimming response speed, privacy protection, and intelligent adaptation capabilities.
The development was driven by addressing specific user pain points, drawing inspiration from aircraft cabin design to overcome industry limitations. As a large, six-seat flagship AI luxury SUV aimed at families, the XPENG GX is designed to provide a luxurious, comfortable, and intelligent mobile space. Cabin privacy and light management are core concerns for users: glare can impair the driving experience, while physical sunshades block views. Scenarios like napping or working inside the vehicle require quickly creating a private environment, and summer sun exposure can risk harming children's eyes and skin. Traditional automotive glass solutions have shortcomings: transparent glass paired with physical blinds offers limited smart functionality and consumes interior space; conventional privacy glass provides mediocre privacy and sun protection; and traditional dimming glass can have issues with visual clarity and lifespan.
XPENG engineers found inspiration in the dimmable glass used in aircraft cabins, aiming to bring an aviation-grade experience to the GX. In collaboration with FUYAO GLASS, they leveraged Liquid Crystal (LC) dye technology, which uses an electric field to control molecular alignment and adjust transparency. By integrating this with the vehicle's electronic architecture and AI models, they successfully developed this industry-leading AI dimming privacy glass.
This milestone product in automotive glass offers seven core performance advantages, delivering a专属 light and privacy cabin experience for GX users. It features an ultra-fast dimming speed of 0.16 seconds for instant privacy; strong privacy through one-way visual technology that blocks the outside view while maintaining full interior visibility; high sun protection, blocking 99.9% of UV rays and 99.4% of visible light in its darkest state; long lifespan, capable of millions of dimming cycles without degradation; super intelligence, with AI that adaptively adjusts tint based on external light conditions; a large total surface area of 1.88 square meters across six windows for panoramic views; and a 5-layer acoustic insulation structure that reduces noise by 3-5 dB for a quieter cabin.
Bringing this technology to mass production required overcoming three major engineering challenges: balancing privacy with visibility, ensuring performance in extreme temperatures, and managing high manufacturing complexity. The joint R&D teams conducted hundreds of test iterations to solve these issues. They optimized optical design, material selection, and manufacturing processes to achieve the perfect balance of darkness for privacy and clarity for vision. The glass was rigorously tested to perform flawlessly in extreme cold (-20°C) and heat (85°C). Furthermore, innovative processes were developed for the complex assembly of the large, curved side windows.
Benefiting from FUYAO's deep expertise in glass and XPENG's strengths in smart EVs and software, this AI dimming privacy glass evolves from a passive component into an intelligent, perceptive core part of the smart cabin. It shifts the function from "passive shading" to "actively understanding light," transforming the vehicle from mere transport into a thoughtful third living space. Users can instantly dim the windows for rest or privacy, and the high UV/light blockage provides comprehensive protection for children. This product not only represents a dual breakthrough in hardware and intelligence for automotive dimming glass but also signals its entry into the AI era, paving a new direction for the global development of smart cabin technology.
