China's National Bureau of Statistics released energy production data for July 2026 on August 17. The report shows that in July, industrial-scale raw coal production decreased year-on-year, crude oil production shifted from decline to growth, natural gas output remained stable, and electricity generation was steady.
In July, industrial-scale raw coal production totaled 340 million tonnes, a 10.1% decline compared to the same period last year, with an average daily output of 11.07 million tonnes. For the first seven months of the year, industrial-scale raw coal output reached 2.7 billion tonnes, down 2.9% year-on-year.
The full report details energy production for July 2026. Industrial-scale raw coal production fell year-on-year, crude oil production turned from a decline to an increase, natural gas output held steady, and electricity generation remained orderly.
Coal, Crude Oil, and Natural Gas Production
Raw coal output declined year-on-year. In July, industrial-scale raw coal production was 340 million tonnes, down 10.1% from the previous year, with an average daily output of 11.07 million tonnes. From January to July, total industrial-scale raw coal output was 2.7 billion tonnes, a 2.9% decrease year-on-year.
Crude oil production shifted from decline to growth. In July, output reached 18.27 million tonnes, a 0.8% increase year-on-year, compared to a 0.5% drop in June, with an average daily output of 589,000 tonnes. For the first seven months, crude oil production totaled 127.69 million tonnes, up 0.9% year-on-year. The decline in crude oil processing narrowed. In July, processing volume was 53.11 million tonnes, down 15.8% year-on-year, with the decline narrowing by 1.9 percentage points from June, and an average daily processing volume of 1.713 million tonnes. From January to July, total crude oil processing reached 396.96 million tonnes, a 6.5% decrease year-on-year.
Natural gas production remained stable. In July, output was 21.4 billion cubic meters, a 0.9% decline year-on-year, with an average daily output of 690 million cubic meters. For the first seven months, natural gas production totaled 154.3 billion cubic meters, up 1.2% year-on-year.
Electricity Generation
Industrial-scale electricity generation was broadly stable. In July, power generation reached 943.9 billion kilowatt-hours, a slight 0.1% decrease year-on-year, with an average daily generation of 30.45 billion kilowatt-hours. For the first seven months, total power generation was 5,698.5 billion kilowatt-hours, a 3.0% increase year-on-year. By source, in July, thermal power turned from growth to decline, hydropower growth accelerated, nuclear and solar power growth slowed, and wind power shifted from decline to growth. Specifically, industrial-scale thermal power fell 3.5% year-on-year, compared to a 0.5% increase in June; hydropower rose 6.7%, with growth accelerating by 1.9 percentage points; nuclear power grew 6.6%, with growth slowing by 1.9 percentage points; wind power increased 4.5%, compared to a 5.6% decline in June; and solar power grew 5.6%, with growth slowing by 8.6 percentage points.
