Intel plans to increase its investment in the gaming hardware sector by launching a new chip and a supporting platform, targeting the portable gaming device market. Daniel Rogers, Intel Vice President and General Manager of the Client Computing Group, announced at CES on Monday that the platform will encompass both hardware and software components. The platform will be built upon Intel's third-generation Core Ultra processors (code-named "Lunar Lake"), which were launched last year and are already used in multiple personal computers. According to a report by gaming media IGN, the upcoming platform will include a chip specifically designed for handheld gaming devices, a claim that has been verified by other technology media outlets. These "Lunar Lake" chips are Intel's first products to be manufactured using the Intel 18A process technology, which is scheduled to enter volume production in 2025. Intel is no stranger to the gaming industry, having developed chips for gaming computers since the 1990s. In 2022, the company deepened its commitment to gaming with the launch of its Intel Arc series of discrete graphics. However, entering the handheld gaming market represents a significant new move for Intel, as this segment is currently dominated by rival AMD. Also during a CES keynote on Monday, AMD, in addition to unveiling new gaming ray tracing and graphics processing technologies, introduced a new Ryzen 7 9850X3D processor for gaming computers. Rogers stated that Intel will reveal more details about this new handheld gaming device later this year.
