As AI Reshapes Marketing and Search, Reddit Strives to Preserve Its Authentic Identity

Reddit is at a turning point, with brands eager to influence AI-generated content by planting their messages on the platform, often clashing with moderators fiercely protective of the community's culture.

While marketers increasingly value Reddit because chatbots frequently cite the site's organic discussions, the platform itself remains unchanged in its resistance to the unbridled brand promotions common on other social networks.

For instance, when luxury jewelry brand Brilliant Earth posted a job for a Reddit strategy manager to shape brand perception and influence search engines, large language models, and consumer decisions, the r/jewelry subreddit immediately raised alarms.

A moderator warned the community, noting: "If you suddenly see a flood of posts praising Brilliant Earth, it's likely no coincidence." The moderator added: "We are figuring out how to stop large brands from infiltrating what may be the last corner of the internet with genuine business reviews and feedback."

The core challenge for brands

Traditional social media managers are used to broadcasting content on Instagram and TikTok. If a chief marketing officer wants staff to adapt to subreddit culture, what skills should they seek?

Strong writing skills and the ability to quickly integrate into the community are critical. On Reddit, tone is often as important as content. Operators must communicate in a familiar subreddit voice, politely and without corporate jargon or insincerity.

Subreddits can certainly host product announcements, but Reddit's text-based, practical nature means that vivid, human writing is a core asset. Users have very low tolerance for AI-generated text.

Lessons from successful brands

Companies like Sonos and Fidelity Investments have found ways to add value on Reddit. For brands that cannot offer technical support or financial advice, what strategies can they adopt?

Many brands use the classic marketing tactic of "surprise and delight," sending gifts or hosting giveaways via private messages. "AMA" (Ask Me Anything) sessions are also a proven way to boost engagement, especially with high-profile guests. Nike has excelled at both approaches.

However, brands do not need an inherently "influential" stance to meet community needs. Almost any topic has a corresponding subreddit with passionate enthusiasts. For example, there is a compliance-friendly community called r/cableporn. If I ran a data center company, I would share behind-the-scenes photos of neatly organized server room cables there and wait for comments.

Impact of potential AI data restrictions

Last month, Reddit considered barring Google from scraping its content for AI model training. If implemented, how would brand plans to secure AI-generated exposure be affected?

If the goal is solely to gain AI citation exposure, brands should increase content on YouTube. Unsurprisingly, Google's AI models heavily scrape YouTube content. Wikipedia is also frequently cited, but multiple sources indicate that Wikipedia editors are more strict than Reddit moderators at blocking promotional edits, which is reasonable.

Even without the large language model citation angle, Reddit remains a platform with growing user loyalty that executives should prioritize. It offers free, raw user feedback for testing ideas and building private communities—a goal many chief marketing officers cite as a core objective.

Reddit news in brief

Two years after its initial public offering, Reddit has been officially added to the S&P 500 index, causing the stock to rise in pre-market trading on Friday. Earlier this year, shares fell nearly a third amid concerns that AI could divert forum traffic.
