HBO Max Streaming Service Price Increase

Warner Bros. Discovery announced on Tuesday that it will increase the prices of all subscription tiers for its streaming platform HBO Max. This marks yet another wave of price hikes in the streaming industry.

The specific price adjustments are as follows:

- The “Basic with Ads” subscription will see a monthly fee increase of $1, now priced at $10.99; the annual fee will rise by $10, making it $109.99. - The “Standard Plan” monthly fee will increase by $1.50, now at $18.49; the annual fee will rise by $15 to $184.99. - The “Premium Plan” will have a monthly fee increase of $2, now priced at $22.99; the annual fee will go up by $20 to $229.99.

For new subscribers, the adjusted prices are effective immediately as of Tuesday; existing users will notice the price change in their first billing cycle on or after November 20. The last price adjustment for HBO Max occurred in June 2024.

This increase follows comments from Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, who mentioned “HBOMax will raise prices” just weeks prior. During last month’s Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology Conference, Zaslav emphasized the high quality of content on the HBO Max platform, stating that the current pricing is too low.

Zaslav stated, “Whether it’s our overall business, movie and TV production, or streaming content, we have always upheld high-quality standards — this advantage provides us with room for price increases. We believe that the current pricing is well below its true value.”

Additionally, Zaslav revealed that HBO Max will soon implement password sharing restrictions. Once this measure takes effect, HBO Max will join other mainstream streaming platforms such as Netflix and Disney+ in combating password sharing.

In recent weeks, several streaming platforms have announced price hikes, and HBO Max’s adjustment follows closely behind. For instance, Disney recently raised subscription prices for Disney+ and Hulu, while Apple increased fees for its streaming services in August.
