South Korean Court Orders SK Group Chairman to Pay $640 Million to Ex-Wife in Divorce Ruling

A court in South Korea ruled on Friday that SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won must pay 944 billion won ($640 million) to his ex-wife, Roh Sook-young, in a divorce-related asset division case.
This amount is lower than the previously ordered 1.38 trillion won. That earlier ruling had raised questions about his stake in the group's holding company.
The Supreme Court last year overturned part of a lower court's decision on the divorce asset division, stating that funds allegedly provided to the group by Roh Sook-young's father, former President Roh Tae-woo, cannot be considered a legally protected contribution.
Both parties have the right to appeal the ruling to the Supreme Court.
