Two Energy Storage Battery Fires Reported Within Five Days

Within the span of just five days, two lithium battery-related fire incidents have occurred globally. One took place in a cell testing workshop owned by an A-share listed company, while the other marks the first recorded energy storage battery plant fire in Romania. These events have once again directed industry attention towards safety management in both energy storage operations and battery production facilities.

According to reports, Far East Smarter Energy Co., Ltd. (600869) announced on the evening of August 31 that a fire broke out in the cell aging testing workshop at its majority-owned subsidiary, Jiangxi Far East Battery Co., Ltd., on the night of August 30. This subsidiary is a key platform for the company's smart battery business, focusing on the R&D, production, and sales of cylindrical cells, energy storage cells, modules, PACKs, and energy storage systems, with bases in Yichun, Jiangxi, and Yixing, Jiangsu. The fire site, Jiangxi Far East Battery, serves as the implementation entity for the Yichun production base.

Following the incident, the company activated its emergency response plan, mobilizing internal resources and cooperating with local fire departments to extinguish the blaze. No casualties have been reported. A portion of equipment in one plant building and some products under inspection were damaged, with the full extent of the damage still under evaluation. All assets involved are covered by property insurance, and the impact on the company's profits will be determined after the insurer completes its loss assessment. The company's production and business operations continue as normal.

In a separate incident, a battery room at an energy storage facility in Stâlpu, Buzău County, Romania, caught fire at 23:30 on August 26. The flames were extinguished by the morning of August 27, with no injuries reported. The project is a 5.35MW solar-plus-storage system with over 9,300 photovoltaic modules and two battery rooms equipped with fire detection and suppression systems. The fire affected a building of approximately 500 square meters, which was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived. Smoke entered the other battery room, which did not catch fire. Local fire services dispatched six fire engines, a rescue vehicle, and an ambulance, with additional support of three fire engines from Prahova County.

Due to the high temperatures, toxic smoke, and risks of re-ignition and explosion associated with lithium battery fires, responders adopted a defensive approach from a distance of approximately 200 meters. The structure was located about 10 meters from a transformer containing insulating oil, posing secondary risks. Personnel remained on-site to monitor conditions even after the fire was extinguished. As of now, the project's storage capacity, operating entity, and cause of the fire have not been disclosed.
