On August 28, Moody's Ratings has assigned a Baa3 issuer rating to Geely Automobile while simultaneously withdrawing its Ba1 corporate family rating. The rating outlook has been revised from positive to stable.
"This rating action and stable outlook reflect Geely Automobile's solid track record of consistently growing market share and enhancing profitability amidst intense industry competition. These achievements are underpinned by an expanded global footprint and a richer product portfolio, which have collectively strengthened the company's operational fundamentals," said Daniel Zhou, Moody's Vice President and Senior Analyst.
"We anticipate that Geely Automobile will continue to sustain robust credit fundamentals, characterized by low leverage, ample liquidity, and substantial cash reserves. These strengths are sufficient to cushion the pressures stemming from fierce industry competition and ongoing capital expenditures," Zhou added.
Rating Rationale: The Baa3 rating reflects Geely Automobile's strong competitive position in China's automotive sector, along with its longstanding track record of low leverage, superior liquidity, and a net cash financial profile. However, the rating also factors in associated risks and challenges, including intense competition in the Chinese auto market and the capital investment pressures and project execution risks tied to overseas expansion. These risks are mitigated by Geely Automobile's leading industry standing, prudent financial position, and robust cash flow generation.
From January to July 2026, Geely Automobile's sales grew by 2% year-over-year, outperforming the broader market, which contracted by 3.7%. Overseas sales surged by an impressive 165%, emerging as a core growth driver. Moody's expects this growth trajectory to persist, forecasting sales growth of 5%-10% over the next 12-18 months, supported by new model launches, rising overseas demand from production capacity ramp-up, and a gradual recovery in the domestic market once the demand-pull effect from 2025 stimulus policies fades.
Geely Automobile's profitability has shown improvement, with gross margins rising to 17.9% in the first half of 2026, up from 16.6% for the full year 2025. This earnings enhancement primarily stems from higher-margin overseas operations, an increased revenue contribution from premium brands, and cost savings achieved through operational synergies following asset integration.
Following the privatization of Zeekr, Geely repaid a substantial portion of Zeekr's bank loans. As of the end of June 2026, the company's total debt had decreased significantly to RMB 13 billion from RMB 23 billion at the end of 2025. While capital expenditures may increase modestly over the next 12-18 months to support overseas production expansion and sustained research and development investments, Moody's believes that Geely's robust operating cash flow will be sufficient to cover these funding needs, with the company expected to continue generating positive free cash flow during this period.
Moody's projects that Geely Automobile's EBIT margin will stabilize in the range of 5.0%-5.5% over the next 12-18 months, with a debt/EBITDA ratio maintained at approximately 0.5x. For the twelve months ending June 2026, these two metrics stood at 4.8% and 0.6x, respectively. The company's exceptionally low leverage and steadily improving EBIT margins have already reached levels comparable to global investment-grade automotive peers.
Geely Automobile maintains an excellent liquidity position. As of June 30, 2026, excluding restricted cash, the company held net cash of RMB 46 billion on its balance sheet. The company has maintained a net cash position consistently since the end of 2012.
The issuer rating is not affected by the payment hierarchy of subsidiary debt. Although Geely operates as a holding company with the majority of debt residing at subsidiary levels, the diversified business segments and multi-subsidiary structure across domestic and international markets effectively mitigate structural subordination risk.
ESG Considerations: Geely Automobile has implemented various measures to reduce environmental and social risks, including developing multiple electric vehicle technology pathways, offering a comprehensive electrified product lineup, and rolling out sustainability initiatives across its entire business operations. The company's longstanding commitment to conservative financial policies, evidenced by its robust risk management framework and historical record of low leverage and net cash positions, combined with management's strong operational track record and credibility, helps to partially mitigate governance risks associated with the controlling shareholder's high-voting-power ownership structure.
