Northern Star Resources Ltd's stock soared 5.05% intraday on Thursday, marking a significant rebound from recent losses.
The surge follows the gold miner's announcement of a major leadership reset, appointing Suresh Vadnagra, the head of Glencore's nickel and zinc industrial assets, as its next Chief Executive Officer effective October 5. The company also stated that Deputy Chairman Michael Ashforth will succeed Michael Chaney as Chairman after the Annual General Meeting in November.
These appointments are seen as a direct response to pressure from activist investor Elliott Investment Management, which built a stake valued at over A$1 billion in the company in June and called for an exhaustive leadership and strategic review. Analysts note that filling the permanent CEO seat removes a key overhang for the company, providing leadership certainty. The move was accompanied by the company reporting preliminary fiscal 2026 gold sales of 1.543 million ounces, meeting its revised guidance.
