China-Europe Arctic Express Route Begins Year-Round Service, Cutting Transit Time Nearly in Half with 20-Day Direct Europe Delivery

The China-Europe Arctic Container Express route launched its first 2026 summer voyage today, marking the beginning of regular operations for the Arctic express service. As scheduled, the cargo vessel "Dubai Tower" departed this morning from Ningbo Zhoushan Port's Beilun Third Container Terminal, carrying 570 standard containers of "new three" products and cross-border e-commerce goods, heading for Europe via the Arctic route's Northeast Passage.

This journey is organized and operated by Hai Jie Shipping, a Shanghai-based startup whose headquarters and operations team are located in the city. The company completed the route's maiden voyage in October of last year. As a critical corridor of the "Ice Silk Road," this route is currently the fastest container shipping channel between China and mainstream European ports. It connects Ningbo Zhoushan Port with the UK's Felixstowe Port, with the entire voyage taking about 20 days—nearly half the time of traditional routes. This year, the route will run on a regular schedule for the first time. Following the August 15 maiden voyage, eight consecutive weekly sailings are planned, with the final ship departing on October 3 and arriving at Felixstowe Port on October 24.

Why is the Arctic Express Route So Fast?

Since its inaugural voyage last year, the China-Europe Arctic Express has attracted significant attention, primarily due to its speed. How fast is it? Calculations show the route shortens the sea distance from China to Northern Europe from about 22,000 kilometers to roughly 15,000 kilometers, reducing the journey by nearly one-third. Transit time is about half that of the traditional Suez Canal route and more than half that of the Cape of Good Hope route, even faster than the China-Europe Railway Express by a week. The maiden voyage from Ningbo Zhoushan Port reached Europe in just 20 days. Despite this, Li Xiaobin, Chief Operating Officer of Hai Jie Shipping, felt it "wasn't perfect." The vessel encountered a seasonal storm in the North Atlantic, forcing a speed reduction, delaying arrival at the first discharge port, Felixstowe in the UK, from a planned 18 days to 20 days. Still, the 20-day journey set a record for the shortest direct container shipping time from China to the UK.

What Role Does "Direct Berthing" Play?

The China-Europe Arctic Express prioritizes speed, and achieving this relies on "direct berthing"—essentially, having a berth ready at the port so the ship can dock immediately upon arrival. Without it, waiting for a berth window can take one to two days at best, or three to five at worst. Li Xiaobin and his team visited European ports, initially uncertain about securing support, but many port operators expressed willingness to back the innovative service. After last year's trial run, several cooperating European ports eagerly anticipated a regular schedule next year. At the time, Li noted plans to deploy more ice-strengthened vessels for a fixed weekly or bi-weekly summer schedule. Looking ahead three to five years, with advancements in icebreaker technology and energy power, the navigation season could extend to eight to ten months.

2026 Summer Maiden Voyage and Fleet Expansion

These plans are now materializing. Hai Jie Shipping has deployed seven ice-strengthened vessels, ranging from 962 TEU to 4,890 TEU, including ICE 1A, ICE 1C, and ICE 1D ice-class ships, some powered by LNG. The route will run eight weekly voyages, achieving regular operations during the summer Arctic window. It will call at major Chinese ports including Dalian, Qingdao, Shanghai, and Fuzhou, with Ningbo Zhoushan Port as the domestic departure point, and stop at European core ports like Teesport and Felixstowe in the UK and Hamburg in Germany.

Industry Perspective: A New Alternative for Cargo Transport

A seasoned shipping industry expert views the route as a valuable supplement to Asia-Europe trade. Historically, most cargo between these regions relies on traditional transport corridors, which carry higher risks. Currently, the Red Sea and Hormuz areas are largely stalled, with major shipping companies bypassing the Cape of Good Hope due to war risks, causing vessel turnover issues, capacity shortages, and freight rates doubling. The Arctic route avoids traditional channels like the Red Sea and Suez Canal, reducing geopolitical disruptions and offering a new option for cargo. However, its impact on overall capacity is limited. Even at full capacity, the route's seasonal total is under 20,000 TEUs, compared to the global in-service container fleet of about 34.4 million TEUs as of July this year.

Growing Interest in Arctic Routes

Notably, Hai Jie Shipping is not the only company operating Arctic routes this year. The China Shipowners' Association recently released the first batch of 2026 China-Europe Arctic voyage plans. The 2026 navigation window is expected from late July to late September, with multiple companies including Xinyun Shipping, Ningbo Hongkun Shipping, Dalian Xinfeng Shipping, Tianjin Yumaritime, and Shanghai Dahua Shipping planning to operate vessels during this period, further expanding Arctic route services. The plans show staggered sailings based on cargo and schedules, with container ships, dry bulk carriers, and multi-purpose vessels. Container ships and multi-purpose vessels total 20,000 TEUs, while dry bulk carriers account for 1.4 million deadweight tons. By late July, Chinese shipping firms had planned 29 ships (8 container, 2 multi-purpose, 19 dry bulk) for 44 Arctic voyages this year—the highest number of vessels and planned voyages in a single year for China's Arctic shipping practice.

Supporting Infrastructure and Forecasts

Public services are also advancing. On August 1, the Ministry of Transport's Beihai Navigation Support Center began broadcasting Arctic sea ice forecasts via maritime communication channels—China's first such service. Forecasts include ice thickness, area, and drift speed, with high temporal (3-hour) and spatial (10 km) resolution, updated every 24 hours. This provides critical data for polar navigation, aiding route planning and risk avoidance, supporting high-quality polar shipping development.

Structural Shift in China's Foreign Trade

Industry analysts believe the Arctic route's growing popularity partly reflects a structural shift in China's foreign trade. For instance, the route's natural low-temperature conditions suit high-value-added goods like photovoltaic, energy storage, and precision electromechanical products, reducing cargo damage and better ensuring quality. The shift from single or irregular voyages to seasonal fixed schedules has effectively promoted the China-Europe connectivity network.

Future Challenges and Possibilities

While the Arctic route's volume still lags far behind traditional corridors, the expert suggests that with global warming and ongoing geopolitical crises, development progress "may accelerate." The route's navigability, economic convenience, and commercial sustainability are promising. However, large-scale operations face multiple challenges. Extreme natural conditions remain the most direct obstacle. Recent incidents involving the Omani Suezmax tanker "Lynx" and the Dutch cargo ship "Thames Fort" highlight that even amid climate warming, natural risks in Arctic waters are difficult to predict and control. Additionally, infrastructure system gaps along the route could amplify operational risks. Investigations into the "Thames Fort" grounding revealed that water depth data in the area relies on 1980-1989 surveys, with two-kilometer measurement intervals often conducted under ice, leaving shoal extents poorly documented. Experts caution that the Arctic route currently operates only in a limited window, with safety heavily dependent on icebreaker support and robust emergency systems. Achieving regular commercial operations will require breakthroughs in environmental adaptation, infrastructure, technological innovation, governance coordination, and ecological protection.
