On August 18, the Linying County People's Government News Office issued a situational report following media coverage of a fatal traffic accident involving a Xiaomi vehicle that sparked public attention.
According to the official report, on February 11, 2025, at 1:53 PM, a driver surnamed Wang was operating a Xiaomi sedan (with one occupant) traveling eastbound along Binhe Road in Linying County when the vehicle crossed into the left lane (northbound section) and collided head-on with a westbound white Honda sedan carrying six passengers. The collision resulted in four fatalities and two injuries.
Following the accident, county police arrested Wang in accordance with the law. The case is currently under review by the county people's court.
The report addressed online rumors claiming that Wang had presented a "poverty household certificate" during court proceedings. Upon investigation, authorities found that Wang, a resident of Shili Village in Wadian Town, Linying County, had his mother contact village party secretary Li to request a character reference prior to the court hearing.
Village party secretary Li, influenced by personal relationships, issued a certificate stating Wang's good conduct during his time in the village and noting that his "family's economic situation is average, and after the accident, they have exhausted all resources to compensate victims, leaving the family in financial difficulty." The document was not a poverty household certificate as circulated online.
Regarding the improper issuance of this certificate, the Wadian Town Party Committee convened a meeting on August 17. The committee determined that village party secretary Li had issued documentation containing content outside the scope of village committee responsibilities without fully understanding its intended use, constituting a failure to properly fulfill his duties. As a result, Li has been suspended from his position.
The Linying County People's Government News Office stated that the case will continue to be processed in accordance with legal and regulatory procedures.
