Deutsche Bank (DB.US) is currently awaiting regulatory approval as it prepares to launch digital asset custody services for European institutional clients. This move by a globally systemically important bank marks a significant step for traditional finance giants into the cryptocurrency space. The bank announced on Wednesday that it will onboard its first customers this year once the regulatory process is finalized.

Initial custody offerings will cover Bitcoin, Ethereum, as well as several stablecoins, including Circle's USDC and EURC, along with AllUnity's EURAU. The bank's plans also include expanding to other digital financial instruments in the future. Back in June 2023, Sabih Behzad, the head of digital assets, had hinted at the possibility of entering the stablecoin market or even issuing its own token.

According to a spokesperson, Heinrich Fromsdorff, Deutsche Bank (DB.US) expects to secure its operating license this October under the European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA). With MiCA officially coming into effect on July 1st, the bank's momentum in this area is likely to accelerate further.

Data tracked by Woofun AI shows that as a global systemically important bank listed by the Financial Stability Board, Deutsche Bank's (DB.US) compliance journey carries significant weight as an industry benchmark. Looking back at its strategic moves, Deutsche Bank (DB.US) had already applied for a digital asset custody license in Germany back in 2023, initially unveiling its cryptocurrency custody plans through a partnership with Taurus. This early groundwork has laid a solid foundation for its current compliance efforts under the MiCA framework, underscoring its long-term strategic ambitions in digital asset infrastructure.

On the competitive front, other German banks are keeping pace. In April 2024, Landesbank Baden-Württemberg began offering cryptocurrency custody services to institutional clients after teaming up with Austria's Bitpanda. More recently, in December 2025, DZ Bank confirmed it had received authorization from Germany's BaFin regulator under MiCA to operate its meinKrypto platform. This marks another key milestone in the traditional banking sector's compliance-driven expansion into crypto custody, following in the footsteps of Deutsche Bank (DB.US).
