Leipzig-Halle Airport, a critical hub for freight and military transport in Germany, temporarily suspended flights after an armed drone was detected overnight, alongside a mid-air collision between a cargo plane and an unidentified small object.

Local police issued a statement Wednesday morning confirming that several aircraft, including a passenger jet, were forced to divert, and parts of the airport remain closed. The facility has previously been targeted by espionage and sabotage activities.

In a separate announcement later Wednesday afternoon, the state prosecutor's office and the state criminal police department have taken over the investigation and are seeking witnesses. A spokesperson for the German Interior Ministry confirmed the drone's discovery, with state police stating it was equipped with an explosive device.

German authorities separately confirmed that a plane struck a small object mid-air, forcing an emergency landing at a regional airport in Hanover. State police reported only minor damage to the aircraft.

German news agency dpa reported, citing a NATO spokesperson, that the drone was spotted near a Ukrainian aircraft. Since the onset of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Leipzig Airport has served as a key base for Ukrainian Antonov transport planes.

George Barros, head of innovation and open-source analysis methods at the Washington-based Institute for the Study of War, commented: "The escalation of Russian sabotage activities has formed a well-documented, consistent pattern. Today's events appear to align with this Russian campaign." A NATO spokesperson stated the alliance is aware of the situation, and German authorities are conducting an investigation.
