What Effect Would Trump's $5,000 Checks Have on Inflation?

Trump has pledged $5,000 checks to US adults if Republicans win the midterm elections. Kent Smetters, head of the Penn Wharton Budget Model, estimates a full rollout would cost about $1.35 tln; with a household income cap of $400,000 the cost would be roughly $1.15 tln. If recipients spend about $400 bln within six months, US inflation could be pushed up by up to 0.5 percentage point over the following year.
