For 34 years, Tang Jihua, Vice President of Henan Agricultural University, has been dedicated to the genetic breeding of corn. The "Golden Grain" MY73 variety he developed, known for its high density tolerance, high yield, and high bulk density, has ranked first in national promotion area for two consecutive years. The YD268 variety was transferred for a record-breaking 26.8 million yuan domestically. As Vice President and Professor at Henan Agricultural University, Tang Jihua shared, "Every day, we contemplate how to breed better varieties to achieve higher yields and ensure national food security." Driven by this sense of responsibility, Tang's team addressed challenges such as high temperatures and rust diseases in the Huang-Huai-Hai region by proposing a new breeding strategy of "reducing inferior traits, increasing density, enhancing bulk density, and expanding efficiency." They also cloned the world's first major resistance gene, RppC, for southern rust disease, leading to the application of disease-resistant varieties exceeding 90%. The efficient sterile seed production system they established has been promoted over 200 million mu cumulatively, generating social benefits exceeding 10 billion yuan. Tang Jihua expressed, "Aligning our passion and pursuit with the nation's needs and contributing to national food security is the greatest happiness for us breeders."
